長い眠りから目覚めたアンギラスや、翼竜・プテラノドンが突如復活したラドンなど、一度は絶滅した古生物が現代に蘇った。それらの祖を振り返ると、19世紀後半からさまざまな作品に登場し始めた古代生物SF小説群に行きつく。

The Monsters that Time Forgot

Ancient creatures that were once extinct, such as Anguirus, which woke up from a long sleep, and Rodan, which suddenly revived from the pterosaur Pteranodon, have been brought back to life in modern times. Looking back at those ancestors, we come to a group of ancient biology SF novels that began to appear in various works from the latter half of the 19th century.

近代的な古生物学が本格的にスタートした直後から始まった「前世紀の怪物探し」。だが、その驚異のビジュアルを人々に最初に提示したのは、権威ある学究の場ではなく、古代生物SF小説の世界だった。

The search for monsters from the last century started right after modern paleontology started in earnest. However, it was the world of ancient biology sci-fi novels, not the prestigious academic venues, that first presented people with these marvelous visuals.

恐竜の子孫、翼竜の末裔、太古の節足動物の生き残り……。想像を絶する前世紀の怪物たちは、現代社会に侵入して恐怖を撒き散らす。文明を盾に威張り散らす人間を踏み潰すのは、原初の野生であり、荒ぶる古代の魂なのだ。

Descendants of dinosaurs, descendants of pterosaurs, survivors of ancient arthropods… Unimaginable monsters from the last century invade modern society and spread terror. It is the primordial wildness, the raging ancient spirit, that tramples underfoot the humans who use civilization as a shield to overwhelm them.

ジュール・ヴェルヌの『地底旅行』(1864年)が夢想した、地底に広がる海をゆうゆうと泳ぎまわ魚竜や蛇頚竜。アーサー・コナン・ドイルが著した『失われた世界』(1912年)のメイプル・ホワイト台地を闊歩する暴君竜。エドガー・ライス・バローズによる『時間に忘れられた国』(17年)や「ペルシダー」シリーズには、無数の奇怪な怪物たちが登場する。

The ichthyosaurs and serpentine dragons that swim freely in the sea beneath the earth, as dreamed of in Jules Verne’s “Journey to the Bottom of the Earth” (1864). A tyrant dragon that roams the Maple White Plateau in Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Lost World” (1912). Countless bizarre monsters appear in The Land Forgotten by Time (1989) and the Pellucidar series by Edgar Rice Burroughs.

やがて、人気のジャンル小説として地位を確立した「古代生物SF」は、映画という最新技術と手をとり、特撮監督ウィリス・オブライエンがつくり出した特殊効果で『ロスト・ワールド』(25年)、『キング・コング』(33年)などの名作群に結実する。

Eventually, “Ancient Biology SF” established itself as a popular genre novel, special effects created by special effects director Willis O’Brien, combined with the cutting-edge technology of film, resulted in masterpieces such as “The Lost World” (1925) and “King Kong” (1933).

そして、小説世界や欧米の銀幕内を暴れまわった魚竜や蛇頚竜、暴君竜、翼竜は、日本の映画人たちも魅了。「ゴジラ」シリーズをはじめとする東宝作品で、彼らは姿を変えて活躍することになる。

The ichthyosaurs, serpentine dragons, tyrant dragons, and pterosaurs that have rampaged through the world of novels and on the silver screens of Europe and the United States have also fascinated Japanese filmmakers. In Toho works such as the “Godzilla” series, they will change their appearance and play an active role.

アンギラス、ラドン、クモンガ、ゴロザウルス本章で紹介するのは、どれも古生物の図鑑から抜け出したような太古の巨獣のカリカチュアである。戦車や戦闘機と争うため、奇形的な超常能力をつけ加えられてはいるが、彼らを生み出したのは、ヴェルヌやドイルと同太古の世界への憧れである。

Anguirus, Rodan, Kumonga, and Gorosaurus, each one is a caricature of an ancient behemoth that looks like it came out of an encyclopedia of paleontology. In order to compete with tanks and fighter planes, they have been given strange supernatural abilities, but what created them was the yearning for the same ancient world as Verne and Doyle.

都市を完膚なまでに破壊する本章の怪獣たちが望むのは、古代生物SFの原点同様、無垢な生存の欲求であり、原始の世界への回帰である。彼らは失われた世界の覇者、その直系の子孫なのだ。

The monsters in this chapter, who destroy the city completely, desire the same innocent desire for survival and return to the primitive world as the origin of ancient biology science fiction. They are the direct descendants of the lost rulers of the world.
