▽･･･二百万年の昔、「ゴジラ」という巨大 な海棲爬虫類動物が棲息していた。この怪 物が現代にいたるまで長い生命を保つて南 洋の海中にひそんでいたところ、水 爆実験でねぐらを破壊され、日本に 上陸、水爆で受けた放射能をはき散 らしながら、東京を恐怖の底につき 落し、最後は水爆以上の科学兵器で 倒される。――これは東宝映画が七 千万円の予算で八月初旬から撮影を 開始する空想怪奇映画「ゴジラ」 梗概である。

▽…Two million years ago, there lived a gigantic marine reptile called Godzilla. This monster lived a long life until the present day, hiding in the oceans of the South Seas, but its roost was destroyed by a hydrogen bomb test, and it landed in Japan, dispersing the radioactivity it received from the hydrogen bomb. He falls into the depths of fear, and is finally defeated by a scientific weapon more powerful than a hydrogen bomb. –This is the synopsis for the fantasy horror movie “Godzilla,” which Toho Pictures will begin filming in early August with a budget of 70 million yen.

▽･･･さてこの映画の主人公は「ゴジラ」と呼ぶゴリラとクジラをつきまぜたような空想動物だが、これが映画の中では丸ビルほどの大きさがあることになっており、特殊撮影のベテラン円谷英二氏が、得意のトリック技法をどこまで発揮できるかがミソで、このトリック費用に千四百万円を計上しているという。

▽…Now, the main character of this movie is a fantasy animal called “Godzilla” that looks like a mix of a gorilla and a whale, but in the movie, this is supposed to be as big as a Marunouchi building, and special filming was done. The key is how well veteran Eiji Tsuburaya can demonstrate his specialty trick techniques, and he has earmarked 14 million yen for the cost of his tricks.

▽･･･このゴジラの撮影用実物は、大小とりまぜて数個つくることになっているが、一番大きいのは高さ十尺、長さ十五尺。これを最初ゴム・ラテックスでつくる計画で、記者の友人のゴム技術者が東宝から製作を依頼された。友人は「面白い」とばかりに引きうけたものの、ラテックスではいろいろ無理がある。何かもつといい材料はないか、というので、記者はビニクロンゲル(三井化学のプラスチゲル)をすすめた。

▽…The actual Godzilla to be photographed will be made in several different sizes, but the largest one will be ten feet tall and fifteen feet long. The original plan was to make this out of rubber/latex, and a friend of the reporter, a rubber engineer, was commissioned by Toho to make it. My friend accepted it, saying it was interesting, but there are a lot of things that are impossible with latex. He didn’t have any good materials to use, so the reporter recommended Vinicron Gel (Mitsui Chemical’s Plastigel).

▽･･･友人はいまこのビニクロンゲルを使つ …”ゴジラ”製作に余念がない。中へ人が 入って動きまわるというので、ビニクロン ゲルに更に可塑剤を加えて柔らかにすると か、加熱は赤外線ランプの照射でやると か、型は紙でつくり、針金を芯にして粘土 をおしつけるとか、いろいろ工夫をこらし ている。さて、どんなものができ上るか。記者は塩化 ビニル製のゴジラにお目にかか る日をたのしみにしている。(C記者)

▽…My friend is currently using this Vinicron gel…he is busy making “Godzilla.”Since people were going to move around inside the building, he added plasticizer to the vinyl gel to make it softer and heated it with infrared lamps. I’m trying to come up with a lot of things like discipline. Now, what kind of thing will be created? The reporter is looking forward to seeing Godzilla made of vinyl chloride. (Reporter C)
