Mr. Sakai:
I don’t think it was a first-run screening. There were three movie theaters in Sukagawa at the time, but they were all second-run houses, so films were released there a bit later. I saw movies like “Gamera” (the first entry in the Daiei series, “Giant Monster Gamera”, was released on November 27, 1965) and “Daimajin” (the first film in another Daiei trilogy, “Daimajin”, was released on April 17, 1966) at local theaters, often during morning shows.

I had been collecting Godzilla models since those days. I even acquired Marusan Shoten’s “Godzilla: The Greatest Monster of the Century”—a best-seller released in 1964 as the first in a line of kaiju plastic models—but the actual model inside bore little resemblance to the box art, which featured a still photo of the “Kingoji” version of the monster from the 1962 film “King Kong vs. Godzilla” (produced by Tomoyuki Tanaka, directed by Ishiro Honda, with special effects by Eiji Tsuburaya; released August 11, 1962). Like many boys across the country at the time, I felt a secret sense of disappointment, finding the product “a bit underwhelming.” Perhaps because of this, the hobby projects I undertook as a boy focused primarily on plastic models of tanks.

After graduating from Prefectural Sukagawa High School, the student will go on to study in the Department of Visual Design at Tokyo Zokei University (Hachioji City, Tokyo).

Mr. Sakai:
I love plaster cast drawing—which was also part of the entrance exam for art college—and I drew them quite a lot back when I was in high school. The fundamentals I built up then might be serving me well today.

During my senior year of university, I saw “Mothra vs. Godzilla” (produced by Tomoyuki Tanaka, directed by Ishiro Honda, with special effects by Eiji Tsuburaya; released April 29, 1964) at a movie theater in Shinjuku, and the fascination with Godzilla I had cultivated during childhood was rekindled.

Research reveals that on March 15, 1980, a re-edited, 76-minute shortened version of “Mothra vs. Godzilla” was screened as a double feature alongside “Doraemon: Nobita’s Dinosaur”—the first film in the “Doraemon” series. Since Sakai reportedly saw the film during an all-night screening in Shinjuku’s Kabukicho district, this specific release does not appear to be the one he attended; however, that double-feature run drew an audience of 2.98 million and grossed 1.55 billion yen, ranking fourth among Japanese films in box-office revenue for the year. Incidentally, the top-grossing Japanese film that year was Akira Kurosawa’s “Kagemusha” (2.68 billion yen). Kinji Fukasaku’s “Virus” (also known as “Day of Resurrection”) took second place (2.37 billion yen), followed by Toshio Masuda’s “203 Koshi” (The Battle of Port Arthur) in third, and the Kadokawa production “G.I. Samurai” in fifth.

After finishing his previous job, he returned to his hometown and took a position at an advertising agency in Koriyama City, where he held various roles—including designer, photographer, and sales representative—sometimes simultaneously.

Around 1983, the toy manufacturer Kaiyodo released a Godzilla series in the form of so-called “garage kits”—products created by making silicone molds from original sculptures (often modeled in clay) and casting them using materials like urethane resin—which met with a tremendous response.

What made this approach groundbreaking was the decision to move beyond viewing Godzilla merely as an abstract design; instead, the creators linked specific film titles to the actual suits used in production, aiming to faithfully replicate the sculpting of those specific suits. They distinguished between and recreated the Godzilla designs seen in films such as the original 1954 “Godzilla”, 1962’s “King Kong vs. Godzilla”, and 1964’s “Mothra vs. Godzilla”. It was during this period that nicknames like “Shodai-Goji” (First-Generation Godzilla), “Kingoji” (“King Kong vs. Godzilla” version), and “Mosu-Goji” (“Mothra vs. Godzilla” version) became widely known among fans.

Hisanori Nukada (this magazine)
(Below—) Mr. Fukuno, you also put together a feature article in the magazine at that time, didn’t you?

Fukuno:
I planned, composed, and wrote a 4-page color feature for the April 10, 1984 issue of Weekly Playboy magazine.

Mr. Sakai:
(Looking at the pages of a magazine from that era brought in by Mr. Fukuno)
Ah, yes, this is it. This sculpt is by Mr. A, and I believe this one is by Mr. B. I actually bought and built these very garage kits myself. Inspired by figures like the Godzilla from Popy’s (now Bandai) “Real Hobby Series,” I decided to try sculpting a “Mosu-Goji” (Godzilla vs. Mothra version) of my own. This was my first Godzilla figure; I finished it in October 1984.

Fukuno: Did you build the whole thing from scratch?

Sakai:
Yes. I built it up by applying epoxy putty over a base of “Formo” stone clay; I worked on it at home over the course of three months after coming back from work.

——— How big is it?

Sakai:
It is the 30cm size (showing a photograph included in the book “Yuji Sakai Kaiju Sculpting Works”, published by Hobby Japan Co., Ltd. in August 2005).

Fukuno:
This is amazing. The face is exactly that of “MosuGoji.”

Sakai:
Looking at it now, the expression feels immature, and it’s a bit embarrassing.

Fukuno:
Back then, enthusiasts would buy Kaiyodo garage kits, shave off the faces, apply epoxy putty, and sculpt them with spatulas to create their own unique versions of “Mosu-Goji.” Did you not do that, Mr. Sakai?

Sakai:
Even though it’s a kit, it is someone else’s creation, so I didn’t do that.

——— That’s impressive. Did you do that too, Mr. Fukuno?

Fukuno:
I was doing it all the time (laughs). For “King Kong vs. Godzilla”, “Mothra vs. Godzilla”, and the original film, I used putty to rebuild the faces.

———You really are different right from the starting point, Mr. Sakai.

Sakai:
After that, working with the concept of recreating the movie suit at full scale using the same materials and construction methods, I created just the head section of the “MosuGoji” suit.

Fukuno:
I see. I had the same thought, but it was just a daydream in my head.

For the “MosuGoji” head, a Styrofoam core was used; to faithfully recreate the original suit, the team referenced interviews with the film’s production staff and applied a mixture of latex rubber and India ink. The textured scales were crafted using the same sculpting techniques employed for the actual suit: shaping urethane foam with scissors, attaching it to the base, and then coating it with latex to set it in place. The eyes were created via heat-pressing—heating a transparent PVC sheet and molding it over a form—to replicate the original suit’s dual-layer structure, and the lower jaw was designed to open and close.

It measures approximately 43 cm in height. This is slightly larger than the head of the suit used in the film—specifically, about 143% of that size. Thanks to its solid construction, the piece remains in excellent condition to this day, exactly as it was originally made (it is currently kept at the workshop).

Immediately after that, I tried making a small head of Kingoji, which I had loved since I was a child, just like Mosugoji, and I thought it was a good idea, so I made a full-length figure of it, and it ended up being a large 45cm model.

As this was my first time creating a large-scale sculpture, I used a method involving a wire-and-wood armature built up with “Formo” stone-texture clay; a key feature of the work was my attempt to capture a dynamic pose—specifically, one where the body is twisted and the tail is swinging outward.

Mr. Sakai, you wanted to portray the Godzilla sculpt not merely as a reproduction of the filming suit, but as a living creature. That’s why you boldly opted for a dynamic composition.
