I am visiting Sakai Yuji Modeling Workshop Ltd. in Sukagawa City, Fukushima Prefecture, to speak with sculptor Yuji Sakai, who creates the original prototypes for miniature models of monsters such as Godzilla.

Since creating his first Godzilla figure—standing just 3 cm tall—in 1984, Sakai has produced nearly 200 kaiju sculptures over the subsequent twelve years (as of the time of the interview). These have been sold as “garage kits”—assembly kits he produces and markets himself using silicone molds for casting. Additionally, based on his original sculpts, molds are created using specialized techniques like electroforming to manufacture soft vinyl products (known as “sofubi”)—ranging from kits to fully painted figures—which are then distributed by major manufacturers.

Furthermore, there are also works and exhibits created at “full scale”—specifically, the size of the suit (approximately two meters tall) used for special effects filming—based on 3D measurement data.

The most important aspect of the kaiju—such as Godzilla—created by Mr. Sakai is “historical and scientific accuracy.”

P 99

Since the 1954 film “Godzilla,” there have been 35 kaiju movies featuring the character—including those produced overseas—yet the specific suits used for filming and the CGI data differ subtly from one movie to the next; consequently, the physical design of Godzilla varies depending on the film. A distinctive aspect of this is that fans have assigned nicknames to each version to distinguish between them.

Furthermore, suits were sometimes repaired during filming due to damage, and the scenes in the final film were not necessarily shot in chronological order. Yuji Sakai goes beyond merely replicating the differences in suit design between productions; he meticulously examines movie scenes and production stills to analyze the condition of the suit at specific times, recreating the sculpt to reflect exactly how the suit appeared in a particular scene.

It is not only the intricate sculpting and dynamic posing that have earned Yuji Sakai’s work such high regard, but also the accuracy of his research.

Unfortunately, I was unable to view the interior of the modeling room—located in one corner of the workshop—due to the works currently in progress; however, I was told that Mr. Sakai immerses himself in his work around the clock in this room on the workshop’s ground floor.

The prototypes for products such as garage kits and soft vinyl figures are reportedly made primarily from paper clay. The standard sculpting method used in fine art—creating a pose with wire and then modeling with oil-based clay—is not employed.

According to Mr. Sakai, the process for creating medium-to-large-scale figures (30 cm or taller)—such as Godzilla—involves sketching the intended form onto two sides of a Styrofoam block with a felt-tip marker, roughly cutting out the shape with a utility knife, and then performing a rough carving to create a torso with limbs before finally applying paper clay.

For small-scale sculptures, use paper clay all the way through to the core.

The material being used is “La Doll,” a stone-powder clay manufactured and sold by Padico Co., Ltd., which is widely used in figure making.

According to the manufacturer’s documentation, the material uses ultra-fine stone powder, resulting in an exceptionally smooth finish; because it takes several days to dry, it allows for adjustments while sculpting, and once dry, it can be carved, filed, or polished. It also reportedly offers greater strength and better resistance to cracking compared to standard paper clay.

The artist sculpts by adding and removing material—fully utilizing the specific properties of La Doll—but often, if dissatisfied with a part, will simply slice it off and start over.

Furthermore, the finished prototype must be cut apart—separating the limbs and head—to create molds for a garage kit; consequently, a wire armature cannot be used.

Reiichiro Fukuno
Michelangelo once said, “My sculpture is the work of liberating a form trapped within a block of marble,” and sculpting from Styrofoam is somewhat similar to that.

Mr. Yuji Sakai
I don’t always use Styrofoam, so the process isn’t just about carving. It involves a repetitive cycle of applying paper clay, carving it down, applying more, and carving again. That said, I think the final shaping relies more on carving than on building up material. In any case, I keep refining the form until I achieve the exact look I’m aiming for. I use “Sculpey” for details like Godzilla’s dorsal fins or the scales on King Ghidorah’s body.

“Sculpey” is a well-known modeling material in the fields of figure and doll making; it is a modeling clay originally released by the American company Polyform Products in 1967. Made of plastic resin, it does not harden at room temperature, allowing artists to spend days using sculpting tools and spatulas to create intricate details until they are satisfied with the work. Once the sculpting is complete, the piece is hardened by baking it in a standard home oven at a high temperature of around 130°C.

It takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes to cure per 6 mm of thickness. A key feature is that there is virtually no shrinkage during curing, meaning no loss of volume occurs.

Even after curing, it can be cut with a utility knife, carved with a craft knife, and sanded.

In the case of King Ghidorah, a thin layer of Sculpey was applied to the torso, and the scales were then sculpted one by one using a spatula.

Mr. Yuji Sakai

Yuji Sakai was born in Sukagawa City in 1958.

He reportedly first learned of Godzilla’s existence when he saw an illustration at a friend’s house during kindergarten. Since he was skilled at drawing, his friends would pester him to draw pictures of monsters, and he frequently did so.

My first experience with a kaiju movie was when I was six years old—in my first year of elementary school—and saw “Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster” (produced by Tomoyuki Tanaka, directed by Ishiro Honda, with special effects direction by Eiji Tsuburaya; released December 20, 1964) at the local “Chuo-kan” cinema.
