Illustration of making Godzilla

本書に掲載した鈴木儀雄氏のイラスト。鈴木氏は、「ゴジラ」など初期東宝特撮の造形アルバイトで後に美術として活躍。これは初代ゴジラの着ぐるみを焼成した様子を描いている。以下、鈴木氏の解説。「開米氏がゴジラの尻尾に和紙を貼っている図です。背後の図はゴジラを焼く窯です。約・高サ2m×巾3mX奥行2mのものと記憶しています。又赤外線ランプ(熱電球)は40個程度付いていたと思います。内部はブリキ(錫をメッキした薄い鉄板)を張り熱を強めていました。薄いので加工もしやすく、又銀色に光り熱をよく反射いたします」

Illustration of Mitsuo Suzuki published in this book. Mr. Suzuki later worked as an artist in a part-time modeling job in the early Toho special effects such as Godzilla. This depicts the first Godzilla’s costume. The following is a commentary by Suzuki. “It is a diagram that Mr. Kaihen has a Japanese paper on the tail of Godzilla. The figure behind is a kiln that burns Godzilla. I remember it is about 2m x 3mx 3mx 2m. think that the infrared lamp (thermal bulb) had about 40 pieces. Inside, the tin (thin iron plate with tin plating) was stretched and the heat was strengthened. Because it is thin, it is easy to process, and it will reflect the heat and reflect the heat well.”
