Honda Group Crank In – Pt 2

P 136
Aizawa signaled for retrieval after experiencing physical distress—specifically, ringing in the ears and headaches caused by atmospheric pressure changes—and pulled the rope; however, there was no response from the surface (the team, while designated as an underwater unit, was a small crew organized primarily by a salvage company). He barely managed to surface on his own, narrowly escaping death. Yet, a few days into the underwater filming, the “Parvo” camera being used—a product of the French company Debrie, characterized by its compact size and internal film magazine—broke down, forcing the underwater shoot to be halted.
According to Tamai’s recollections
As a countermeasure, I organized a special effects unit and devised a plan to film Serizawa in action at the special effects R&D studio.
We prepared a glass tank (two meters long and 70 centimeters wide) and placed it in front of the camera. A person was positioned on the far side of the tank; the background was a set depicting the ocean floor, but it was dimmed with lighting and filled with smoke to create an underwater atmosphere. Live plants were placed inside the tank.
Shots of Serizawa range from close-ups to medium shots. Serizawa pinpoints Godzilla’s location using a detector. The camera captures Godzilla, visible only faintly in the distance. In a long shot, Serizawa fires the new weapon. From this point on, the sequence features Tsuburaya’s special effects work.
From here, the special effects scene begins, and the power of Serizawa’s new weapon is revealed.
Godzilla writhes in agony, briefly leaping out of the water before plunging back beneath the waves with a cry of torment.
The death throes of Godzilla, huddled on the seabed, are a pitiful sight.
It goes without saying that close coordination between the special effects and main unit camera crews was essential; however, to ensure the success of this type of film, every possible measure had to be taken to overcome obstacles.
That said, most of the underwater footage seen in “Godzilla” was actually shot using a “simulated underwater” technique on a soundstage. This method involves filming the subject through a water tank; effects such as air bubbles—like those found in a goldfish bowl—are created by staff blowing air through rubber tubes. While Aizawa’s underwater scenes were filmed differently (as previously mentioned), the underwater sequences featuring Ogata and Serizawa utilized this simulated technique. The shots of Godzilla on the seabed, created by Tsuburaya’s team, also employed this same method.
Higuchi retains a vivid memory of filming a raft at sea during the Toba location shoot; while the camera was positioned on a patrol boat, he would dive into the water to hold the raft steady. This was necessary because—as is common in marine filming—the subject (the raft) would drift with the current, causing the focus to shift, so a way to maintain a constant distance was required. While there are methods such as using ropes (though concealing them requires considerable effort), the classic approach of having a staff member enter the water and tread water while holding the raft in place remains the most reliable solution, both then and now. Needless to say, unlike with a boat, filming a raft requires the staff member holding it to submerge during the actual take so as not to be visible to the camera.

While Aizawa was struggling with underwater photography, Suzuki became the temporary chief and filming began on land.
Mukoyama, the compositing specialist, also brought his own equipment and headed straight from Senjogahara in Nikko to Toba to join the location crew.
I took a boat from my accommodation in Toba to Ijika, then hiked up to the site on the mountain to set up my camera—but that was where the incident occurred.
Work came to a standstill after the film magazine was left behind at the inn. Although the camera crew rushed back to retrieve it, there was little to do to kill the time in the interim. Aizawa remembers the incident, though he is unclear whether it occurred during the latter half of the location shoot or after the underwater filming had been cancelled. According to Shinji Kojima—a lighting crew member at the time who later became a chief lighting technician—the schedule involved filming on a boat in the morning and in the mountains in the afternoon; there were days dedicated solely to boat scenes and others involving both the boat and the mountains. In any case, his memories of Toba-Koguchi are defined entirely by the filming done on the boat and in the mountains.
Next came the filming of the scene where Godzilla emerges atop the mountain at Ishikami—a sequence requiring villagers to race up the mountainside. The path was a narrow trail barely wide enough for a single person to pass; consequently, the crew members, who had originally planned to transport their gear using handcarts, were forced to carry everything up on their backs. Transporting props such as Japanese swords, sickles, and hoes proved particularly arduous. While the crowd of one or two hundred extras rushing up the slope consisted mainly of locals, about fifty actors (some say twenty) were brought in from Tokyo. On certain days, there was interaction with the Taniguchi unit, which was filming “The Sound of Waves” (Shiosai) on nearby Kamishima Island. Young men capable of riding horses were sent to the Nikko-Senjogahara location for the Inagaki unit’s “Musashi Miyamoto,” while the elderly and women were assigned to the Honda unit’s location shoot in Toba.
They would set up a camera at the summit and aim it at the area below; since the camera was invisible from the ground and there were no two-way radios in those days, assistant directors had to run around, and explaining the situation to the locals was a major challenge.
“Everyone, there is a terrifying monster up on that mountain—one unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. We are going to film a scene where you all run toward it to take a look.”
Assistant director Yoshitsugu Nakajima explains earnestly, but the locals just grin, leaving it unclear how much they actually understand.
Nojima and Higuchi, drenched in sweat, bring in the props—spades, sickles, a Japanese sword, a staff, and so on—and hand them out to each person.
“It’s dangerous, so please be careful how you hold it!”
Yoshitsugu Nakajima and Takebayashi each issue a warning.
On the road at the foot of the mountain, extras cast as villagers are lined up, each holding a plow, hoe, sickle, staff, or Japanese sword.
One of the villagers asks Yoshitsugu Nakajima.
“Where is the camera?”
Yoshitsugu Nakajima pointed his finger,
“You see that white flag flying on top of the mountain? That’s the place.”
There was nothing but mountains there, and white cloth hanging between the trees

There is no sign of anyone.
Up on the mountain, Tamai sets up the camera and speaks to Kajita.
“Kaji-chan. Look at the edge of that forest and the area below the embankment—there are gaps in the formation, aren’t there? I’d like you to fill those spots with people, too.”
“Understood. Tokoro-kun, run and tell Nakajima-kun and Take-san to fill the woods and the area below the embankment with people!”
“Huh!”
“Run. The Force flows through the hose. Run!”
“Yes!”
He dashed off like a startled hare.
The road winds spirally down toward the village below, covering a far greater distance than it appears.
At the foot of the mountain, extras are sitting on the ground, while Yoshitsugu Nakajima and Takebayashi take turns peering through binoculars at the summit.
I wonder what happened to them.
“Oh, it’s Tokoro.”
I can see someone running towards me with all their might.
“Nakajima-san! I hear there’s a spot to get out of that forest, and another opening down by the embankment.”
“Alright, I’m heading down to the foot of the embankment.”
The bamboo grove rushes downwards at breakneck speed.
“Alright, here we go!”
Yoshitsugu Nakajima shouts out and starts running.
The extras stand up, one by one.
“The lead group, please advance thirty meters. Triple the distance between you and the person in front, and extend the line toward the rear!”
The extras retreat in a straggling crowd.
Takebayashi, too, returns, sweating as he maneuvers the formation at the foot of the embankment.
“Well then, I’ll be heading back.”
Yoshitsugu Nakajima grabbed Tokoro by the arm.
“Wait a second!”
Takebayashi lowered his binoculars.
“Looks like we’re going live.”
“You run along too. Alright everyone, we’re going live. Live!”
Up on the mountain, at Honda’s shout of “Ready!”, Kajita whirls the bamboo pole with the white flag!
“Start!”
The camera is switched on.
Kajita swiftly swings the bamboo pole down!
At the foot of the mountain.
