Godzilla vs Okinawa

4.16.2022

In the words of Ichiro,「コンピューター コンピューター 僕を怪獣島に連れていけ」“Computer, Computer, take me to Monster Island.” And there is only one Monster Island for me. That’s Okinawa, the island where Godzilla and King Shisa took down MechaGodzilla in the 1974 Showa classic, Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla. In 2019, it was my intention to fly to Okinawa to see my favorite Godzilla places during my trip to the mainland, but my schedule would not allow it. Okinawa was home to the secret base of the Aliens from the Third Planet of the Black Hole, who built MechaGodzilla as the ultimate weapon against Godzilla. The base was located in Gyokusendo (玉泉洞) in Okinawa World (おきなわワールド). Now in 2022, 48 years since his first appearance, MechaGodzilla once again raids Okinawa for an event called Godzilla vs Okinawa (ゴジラ対沖縄). The event is running from March 14 through May 15 at Okinawa World.

Admission is 2,000 yen for adults and 1,000 yen for children. There is a map with 14 designations for sightseeing and activities. Guests are invited to 10 stores where they will greeted by a different “Godzilla Standy.” They find an assortment of Godzilla goods that include special postcards, commemorative stamps and tin badges, and shopping bags. Guests can also celebrate the occasion with Godzilla IPA beer made from the Gyokusendo groundwater.

With the Okinawa World Godzilla Map in hand, guests can ride the Godzilla wrapped shuttle bus to various destinations: 01 Panel exhibition, 02 Mechagodzilla shooting site!, 03 Mechagodzilla Fragment, 04 The secret of Gyokusendo, 05 Mechagodzilla Bingata Experience1, 06 Nanto Sake Brewery and Godzilla IPA Beer, 07 Mechagodzilla suit exhibition, 08 Commemorative stamp, 09 Mechagodzilla T-shirts, 10 Event goods, 11 Godzilla vs. Hub, 12 Room of “Guardian God Awakening,” 13 Compare Godzilla’s height and 14 Secret password.

Guests can visit the Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla shooting locations and places in the caves of Gyokusendo, on the beach and cape of Nago Bay, and at the Nakagusuku castle ruins. Props, photos and exhibit signs can be found in many places. This is a dream experience for Godzilla fans.

Then there is Gyokusendo cave, where guests can search for its secret base, while learning more about the making of the movie and its history. As the largest of the many caves on Okinawa, Gyokusendo is a 5-kilometer stalactite and stalagmites cave with waterfalls and pools of water, formed over 300,000 years.

A trip to Okinawa would not be complete without a visit to Nakagusuku castle ruins, where Nami Kunigami, a descendant of the Azumi dynasty, predicted the appearance of monsters.

The highlight of the experience is the precious MechaGodzilla suit used for shooting in Terror of MechaGodzilla (1975).

Although I will miss out on this wonderful experience, I found a few Godzilla vs Okinawa goods from Buyee Japan. The Godzilla map is impressive. It provides brief background information about the movie locations and have spaces for the Godzilla stamps.

I love my bag with great images of Godzilla, King Shisa and MechaGodzilla. The postcards are special because they are printed on Tsukimogami, which uses shell ginger from a tropical plant that grows naturally in subtropical regions of Okinawa. These collectibles along with an occasion virtual trip will satisfy me until I can get to Okinawa.
