Anxiety on the eve of the birth of “Godzilla”

一九五四年(昭和二九)、黒澤明監督の『七人の侍』が公開されました。円谷さんは「ああいうかたちで映画が作れてうらやましいなあ」といっていました。黒澤さんの完全主義をらやましく思う半面、あそこまでやる必要があるのかという思いだったのでしょう。「映画は妥協の産物なんだから、俺なんか妥協ばかりだよ」ともいっていました。

In 1954 (Showa 29), “Seven Samurai” directed by Akira Kurosawa was released. Mr. Tsuburaya said, “I’m jealous that you can make a movie in that form.” On the one hand, he envied Mr. Kurosawa’s perfectionism, but on the other hand, he must have wondered whether it was necessary to go that far. He also said, “Movies are the product of compromises, so I’m always compromising.”

わたしも黒澤組を見ていて、いつもうらやましいなと感じていましたから、円谷さんの心境が実によくわかるんです。撮影所はみんな黒澤組のほうに向いていましたね。〝円谷組”は全くの裏街道を歩いていました、誰も振り向いてくれません。

I also watched the Kurosawa group and always felt envious, so I really understand Mr. Tsuburaya’s feelings. All the studios were facing the Kurosawa group. “Tsuraya-gumi” was walking down a completely back street, and no one looked back.

そんな撮影所の雰囲気の中で、特撮のスタッフルームにアメリカの水爆実験で被曝した第五福竜丸のニュースが流れてきました。ご存じのように、この事件をヒントにして『ゴジラ』が誕生するわけです。

In such a studio atmosphere, the news of the Lucy Dragon No 5, which was exposed to radiation in the American hydrogen bomb test, came to the special effects staff room. As you know, “Godzilla” was born with this incident as a hint.

『ゴジラ』の企画は田中プロデューサーの立案で極秘裏に進められますが、円谷さんは「今度は仕事らしい仕事ができるぞ」と張りきっていましたね。わたしたちが円谷さんに「今、どんな企画が動いているんですか」と質問しますね、すると「まあ、いいから、もう少し待ってろよ、はっきりするから。今に面白いことがやれるぞ」って。

The “Godzilla” project was planned by Producer Tanaka and proceeded in secret, but Mr. Tsuburaya was enthusiastic, saying, “This time, I can do something that feels like a job.” We ask Mr. Tsuburaya, “What kind of project is going on now?”

わたしたちはそれ以上のことは聞きませんでしたけど、そんな円谷さんの表情や言葉から、今度は思いきってやれるんだなとうすうす感じていました。円谷さんは今度の作品では特殊技術を十分に発揮できる、特殊技術がやっと日の当たる場所に出られる絶好のチャンスだと思っていたのでしょうね。

We didn’t hear anything more than that, but from Mr. Tsuburaya’s expression and words, we had a faint feeling that he would be able to go all out this time. Mr. Tsuburaya must have thought that this would be a perfect opportunity to put his special skills to good use in his next work, and to finally put them out in the sun.

かしシナリオができて、期待に胸をはずませて手にしたその表紙には『G作品』とだけ書かれていました。われわれは「なんだい、このタイトルは?」と首を傾げた記憶があります。まだ『ゴジラ』の正式タイトルが決まっていなかったからか、企画が外部に漏れるのを恐れていたからか、わたしたちにはわかりませんでした。

However, when the scenario was completed, I picked it up with excitement and anticipation. We remember tilting our heads, “What is this title?” We didn’t know whether it was because the official title of “Godzilla” had not been decided yet, or because we were afraid that the project would be leaked to the outside.

このときの円谷さんの態度は、それまでの映画のときとは全く違っていました。「よーし、やってやるぞ」という感じ。

Mr. Tsuburaya’s attitude at this time was completely different from that of the previous movies. It’s like, “Okay, let’s do it.”
