At the forefront of ever-evolving SFX technology, digital compositing is being adopted in the Godzilla world.

The SFX technology—digital compositing—that demonstrated its power to the fullest in films like “Terminator 2,” “Jurassic Park,” and “True Lies,” and presented us with entirely new visual images, was used for the first time in the Godzilla series. Simply put, digital compositing involves converting film data into digital data, performing the compositing on a computer, and then converting it back to film. While it was used for three shots in “Yamato Takeru,” “Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla” is considered the first film to utilize it extensively. The plan is to use digital compositing for nine shots in the special effects sequences and two shots in the main film. Additionally, approximately 20 shots will involve digitally removing wires and piano wires.

The digital compositing for this project was handled by Tokyo Laboratory, along with two optical effects houses, Marine Post Production and Japan Effects Center.

Let’s briefly outline the workflow. First, the captured 35mm film is converted into digital data frame by frame using a scanner (if the materials to be composited consist of both live-action and special effects footage, both are converted). Next, the data is imported into a computer, and the actual compositing work is performed using specialized software. The completed material is then transferred back onto 35mm film using a film recorder.

The biggest advantage of digital compositing is undoubtedly its ability to process images while maintaining the original film quality. It allows for complex masks and halftone masks that were impossible with film resolution, and enables various effects such as three-dimensional compositing. Furthermore, the ability to instantly check the compositing results on a monitor and the ease of making multiple revisions due to the digitized data offer countless advantages. The possibilities it brings to Godzilla films are endless, and the anticipation is immense.
