これまでアンギラス、キングコング、モスラと戦いつづけてきたゴジラに強敵が現われた。これまでの地球怪獣ではなく、宇宙の凶悪怪獣キングギドラがそれだ。美しい金色に輝くキングギドラは、その容姿とは裏腹にラドンより速く、モスラより強く、ゴジラより凶暴といった恐るべき怪獣で、引力光線を武器に破壊の限りを尽くして暴れまわる。大きさもゴジラの二倍の百メートル(ジャイアント馬場の約五十倍)、体重三万トン(ジャイアント馬場の二十五万倍)を誇る。

それを迎え撃つのがゴジラを中心とする、ラドン、モスラの地球怪獣連合軍だ。登場する怪獣は、いずれも東宝怪獣の代表選手たちばかり。つまり、それぞれ特徴も容姿もまったく異なる怪獣たちが『三大怪獣地球最大の決戦』で一堂に会す形となり、見るものを興奮の坩堝へ陥れることとなった。

この迫力満点のキングギドラは、隕石の爆発の炎により形が形成されていく(『禁断の惑星』に出てくるイドの怪物のよう)。その誕生の瞬間から、あまりのカッコよさにシビレてしまった子供たちが大量に発生したほどだ。

引力光線でマリンタワーを倒し、日本各地で破壊の限りを尽くす行為は、ゴジラ以上の迫力を充分見せつけていたといえよう。

It can be said that the act of destroying the Marine Tower with its gravitational rays and causing as much destruction as possible in various parts of Japan fully demonstrated that it was even more powerful than Godzilla.

当初ゴジラもラドンも本能的に暴れていたが、モスラを交えての怪獣サミットの結果、とりあえず人類の味方となって協力してキングギドラに立ち向かうこととなる。このときからゴジラなどの怪獣に個性(人格?)がもたされるようになる。これは、のちにゴジラが人類の味方へ変身する兆しといえるかもしれない。また、特筆すべきは、キングギドラの首の動きだ。いうまでもなく首は操演によるが、吊ってある線がよく絡みつかなかったと思う。いまだにキングギドラの首を上回る操演が存在しないところから、やはり日本の操演技術は世界一と思わざるをえない。
