Was Honda Magic supported by the crowd scene?!?!

ゴジラの出生地(?)である大戸島は、三重県の鳥羽でロケーションされている。この地が本多猪四郎監督の作品に登場するのは、記録映画『伊勢志摩』(一九五〇年)、デビュ一作『青い真珠』(一九五一年)につづいて三回め、お気に入りの場所だったのだろうか。この大戸島には、海岸に流れついた政治(山本廉)を島民が迎えるシーンや、半鐘が鳴って島民たちが山道を駆け上がるシーンなど、現地の人にしか見えない大勢のエキストラが印象的なシーンがある。だが彼らは『東宝SF特撮映画シリーズVOL3』(東宝出版 事業室)に掲載された本多のインタビューによると、「みんな連れてったんですよ。何十人か」「現地の人も少しは入っているかもしれないけどね」とのことなのだ。

Odo Island, the birthplace of Godzilla (?), Is located in Toba, Mie Prefecture. This is the third time that this place has appeared in the work of director Ishiro Honda, following the documentary film “Ise-Shima” (1950) and the debut film “Aoi Shinju” (1951). Was it his favorite place? On this Odo Island, there are many extras that only local people can see, such as the scene where the islanders welcome the politics (Ren Yamamoto) that has flowed to the coast, and the scene where the islanders run up the mountain road with a half bell ringing. There is a scene, however, according to an interview with Honda published in “Toho SF Special Effects Movie Series VOL 3″ (Toho Publishing Business Office), they said, “He took everyone. Dozens of people.” “There may be a few locals, though,” he said.

その、連れて行かれた人たちというのは、いわゆる東宝専属の大部屋俳優の人たちなのだが、その規模を想像したとき、いまさらながら当時の映画界の活況ぶりをうかがうことができるのではないだろうか。

そんな大部屋俳優の演じる群衆によって支えられたシーンが、『ゴジラ』には非常に多い。なかでも群衆がたくさん収容された、ゴジラの襲撃後に登場する仮設病院での場面(小ギレイな宝田明の姿を上目遣いに見つめる避難民女性が圧巻!)は、これがフィクションであることを忘れさせるほどに見事なもの。「作品全体のイメージは僕の場合、戦争体験ですよ」(前掲)と語る本多の演出は、群衆の悲しみや怒りを描くことで、尾形(宝田 明)の「ゴジラこそ、我々日本人の上に、いまなお覆いかぶさっている水爆そのものではありませんか!」というセリフを、見事に映像化しているのだ。

There are many scenes in “Godzilla” supported by the crowd played by such a large room actor. Among them, the scene at the temporary hospital that appeared after Godzilla’s attack, where a large crowd was housed (a refugee woman staring at the appearance of Akira Takarada, who is a small girl, is a masterpiece!) Stunning enough to make one forget that it is fiction. Honda’s production, which says, “In my case, the image of the whole work is a war experience” (above), depicts the sadness and anger of the crowd, and Ogata’s (Akira Takarada) “Isn’t Godzilla the hydrogen bomb that still covers us Japanese?” is beautifully visualized.

また、「平和の祈り」が合唱される、静かだが迫力に満ちた名シーンも忘れがたい。「あれは今の桐朋学園」(前掲)の実際の女子高生を使っての撮影だったそうだ。「制服が変わってないんだよね」と私に教えてくれたのは、そのスジに詳しい某青柳氏だった。

Also, the quiet but powerful scene where “Prayer of Peace” is sung is unforgettable. It seems that it was taken using an actual high school girl from “That is the current Toho Gakuen” (above). It was Mr. Aoyagi who was familiar with the school who told me that the uniforms hadn’t changed.
