Uncovering the Missing Films of GODZILLA (1954)

本書には東宝の公式のカメラが撮影できなかったシーンや、美術スタッフの作業の様子が収められている。撮影は東宝の特殊技術課に所属した面々で、作業の記録のために撮影したものと思われる。これらの写真は経年変化に加え、劣悪な環境で保存されていたため傷みも激しいが、「ゴジラ」の撮影現場を記録した歴史的価値の高い資料であり、また東宝の公式な写真ライブラリィにも保存されていない貴重なカットであることを踏まえ、敢えてそのまま書籍化した。「ゴジラ」の撮影当時、東宝の公式カメラは主に6×6判で撮影していたが、スタッフの記録は全カットが35mmフィルムであり、同じシーンでも公式版とは異なるアングルで撮影されている。またスナップの一部は、東宝の公式カメラが撮影できなかった分を補完するために複写され、「Aナンバー」として東宝の写真ライブラリィに編入されて、現在に至っている(A1~A14)。

This book contains scenes that Toho’s official camera could not shoot and the work of the art staff. The photographs were taken by members of Toho’s special technology division, and are thought to have been taken for the purpose of recording the work. In addition to deterioration over time, these photographs were also severely damaged due to being stored in a poor environment, but they are historically valuable materials that record the filming locations of “Godzilla,” and are also included in Toho’s official photo library. Considering that it is a valuable cut that has not been preserved, I dared to make it into a book as it is. At the time of shooting “Godzilla,” Toho’s official camera was mainly shooting in 6×6 format, but the staff recorded that all cuts were taken with 35mm film, and even the same scene was shot at a different angle than the official version. In addition, some of the snaps were copied to supplement the part that Toho’s official camera could not shoot, and were incorporated into Toho’s photo library as “A number,” and have continued to this day (A1 to A14).

東宝の公式写真ライブラリィは総じて保存状態が良く、他社と比較してもアーカイブとして優秀である。長い年月を経たフィルムの劣化は避けられないが、ある程度のカットについてはデジタルデータ化と修復が進んでいる。東宝グループには写真フィルムを管理する専属のセクションがあり(映画のフィルムとは別)、今では原版が散逸する危険は少なくなったが、長い年月の間にはネガ紛失のため「廃版」処理をされた例がある。「ゴジラ」のスナップでは、No.157からNo.213まで、No.741からNo.755までがそれに該当する。また現在使用されているタイトルロゴは、1984年版「ゴジラ」の時にリニューアルしたもので、1954年のオリジナルを廃版処理して、この新版に差し替えた。一度廃版処理をされると、ライブラリィの台帳上では記載があるが、存在しないものとして扱われる。幸いにも「ゴジラ」のタイトルロゴはオリジナルが残っている。

Toho’s official photo library is generally well preserved and is an excellent archive compared to other companies. Deterioration of film over the years is unavoidable, but progress is being made in digitizing and restoring a certain amount of cuts. The Toho Group has a dedicated section to manage photographic film (separate from film for movies), and although the danger of losing the originals has decreased, over the years, due to the loss of the negatives, it has been discontinued. There is an example that was processed. In the “Godzilla” snaps, No.157 to No.213 and No.741 to No.755 correspond to it. In addition, the title logo currently in use was renewed at the time of the 1984 version of “Godzilla,” and the original in 1954 was discarded and replaced with this new version. Once it is discontinued, it is treated as non-existent even though it is listed on the library ledger. Fortunately, the original title logo of “Godzilla” remains.
