Toho Monster Movie and Self-Defense Forces

陸上・海上・航空による自衛隊が成立したのは昭和29年7月1日であった。朝鮮戦争 の勃発により駐留米軍まで駆 出されたことから、日本国内の治安維持に不安を感じた連合軍最高司令マッカーサーの書簡により昭和25年8月1日に発足したのが警察予備隊。昭和27年の5月1日に海上保安庁を母体にして海上警備隊が設置される。同年8月1日保安庁発足、警察予備隊は保安隊、海上警備隊は警備隊に改称される。そして昭和29年6月2日の国会で可決成立した自衛隊法および防衛庁設置 法によって保安庁が防衛庁となり陸海空三つの自衛隊が誕生したわけである。

It was on July 1, 1954 that the Self-Defense Forces consisting of land, sea and air were established. The National Police Reserve was established on August 1, 1950, in response to a letter from General MacArthur, Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces, who felt uneasy about maintaining public order in Japan after the outbreak of the Korean War forced the US military stationed there. On May 1, 1952, the Japan Coast Guard was established under the Japan Coast Guard. On August 1 of the same year, the National Security Agency was established, and the National Police Reserve was renamed the National Safety Force, and the Maritime Guard was renamed the National Guard. On June 2, 1954, the Diet passed the Self-Defense Forces Law and the Defense Agency Establishment Law, which changed the National Security Agency into the Defense Agency, creating the three Self-Defense Forces, the Ground, Navy, and Air Force.

ちょうど、この自衛隊発足の年に公開された第一作の 「ゴジラ」以来、東宝が製作し怪獣映画は、自衛隊の協力を得て実際の演習場面を撮り入れ迫力ある映像を見せてくれた。

Since the first movie “Godzilla” was released in the same year that the Self-Defense Forces were established, the monster movies produced by Toho, with the cooperation of the Self-Defense Forces, have taken actual training scenes and shown powerful images.

これら怪獣映画では昭和59年公開の新作「ゴジラ」と最 新作の「ゴジラvsビオランテ」 を除いて、ほとんど〝自衛隊”という名称は使われていない。

Except for the new movie “Godzilla” released in 1984 and the latest movie “Godzilla vs. Biollante,” most of these monster movies do not use the name “Self-Defense Forces”.

第一作の「ゴジラ」では“防 衛隊〟、「地球防衛軍」では〝陸上防衛軍〟(統合されて地球防衛軍となる)といった具合である。本章は特撮ファンに〝東宝自衛隊〟と言われる防衛軍の対怪獣兵器の数々を実在の自衛隊の通常兵器、 そして架空の超兵器を分類し解説を 加えてみたものである。

In the first work “Godzilla,” it was “Defense Force,” and in “Earth Defense Force,” it was “Ground Defense Force” (to become the Earth Defense Force). This chapter categorizes and explains the anti-monster weapons of the Defense Force, which are called “Toho Self-Defense Forces” by Tokusatsu fans, into the conventional weapons of the real Self-Defense Forces and fictitious super weapons.
