Godzilla is Born

On October 25th, the film “Godzilla” was finally completed. At the time, Tsuburaya expressed the following sentiment, which is reminiscent of his personality:

“Looking back now, there are many things I wish I could have done differently, but I am proud that in terms of special effects, the film is comparable to the best American films. I have this strange feeling of wanting to brag, but not wanting to brag at the same time.”

A “Godzilla Festival” was held on the studio to celebrate the completion and in hopes of attracting a large audience.

“Okay, now we’ll have a preview screening. Everyone, please gather at the studio.”

All the staff and people from Toho gathered at the screening venue. The room went dark, and the word “Godzilla” appeared on the screen. As the story progressed, the audience was so impressed by the film’s amazing quality that they all stood up, shouting “Banzai” and raising their hands in celebration, even during the screening.

As the final scene unfolds, Godzilla is melted by the Oxygen Destroyer, roaring plaintively. A man is seen crying silently. It is the original author, Shigeru Kayama. It could be said that Kayama was the real creator of Godzilla.

What crime could Godzilla have committed? Awakened from his slumber by mankind’s hydrogen bomb and enlarged to a gigantic size, Godzilla may have simply been wandering around looking for a place to go. And yet, now mankind is going to bury him deep under the sea. Who is to blame? Perhaps this was what Kayama was thinking. Sitting alone, Kayama continued to cry until the lights in the theater were turned on.

Actor Takada Akira, who played the role of Ogata, said he was moved to tears, and people of generations who have no experience of the war probably felt the same way.

What did Godzilla do? In this film, there is a conflict between the position of the defense force or the people who want to eliminate Godzilla, and the position of Yamane, a scientist who wants to keep Godzilla alive to use as research material, but to me, both positions seem selfish. Why don’t they try to protect Godzilla’s quiet life on the ocean floor like in the original? In the midst of all this, many will sympathize with Dr. Serizawa, who is troubled and thinks, “If only I had never made this,” as he tries to protect peace at the cost of his own life.

November 3rd. The staff went to Shibuya Toho. Of course, it was the first day of the release of “Godzilla”. When we got off at Shibu Station, we saw a long line. “What is this?” we wondered, and when we looked closer, we realized that they were all people going to see “Godzilla.” “Godzilla” is not a film for children. There were men and women, adults and children, and everyone in the line, and the wait time was as long as two hours.

When the staff finally arrived at the ticket counter, they were even more surprised.
