“Godzilla vs Destoroyah”

「ゴジラ」以来の田中友幸の製作による最後のゴジラ映画として知られるのが、一九九五年の「ゴジラVSデストロイア」で、ゴジラ映画第二十二作となり平成シリーズ最後の作品となる。監督は大河原孝夫、特技監督は川北紘一で、音楽は伊福部昭が担当している。予告編には「ゴジラ死す」とあり、設定としては前作の「ゴジラVSスペースゴジラ」の続きとなるのだが、ここではあくまでも「ゴジラ」との関連にしぼって扱う。

The last Godzilla movie produced by Tomoyuki Tanaka since “Godzilla” was the 22nd Godzilla movie in “Godzilla vs. Destoroyah” in 1995, and is the last work of the Heisei series. Directed by Takao Okawara, special skill director is Koichi Kawakita, and the music is in charge by Akira Ifukube. The trailer says “Godzilla death,” and the setting is the continuation of the previous “Godzilla vs Space Godzilla,” but here it is handled in connection with “GOJIRA.”

タイトルも初代を思わせるロゴが砕けて新しいロゴがかぶさり、オキシジェン・デストロイヤーのCGが登場する。この作品で重要な点は二つある。ひとつは、「ゴジラ」の山根恵美子が再登場すること。もうひとつは「オキシジェン・デストロイヤー」の役割が新しく意味づけられたことである。「ゴジラVSデストロイア」は、後から「起源」の物語をどのように読み替えるのかという好例だろう。

In the title, the logo reminiscent of the first generation is broken, and the new logo is covered, and the CG of the oxygen Destroyer appears. There are two important points in this work. One is that Emiko Yamane of “Godzilla” will reappear. The other is that the role of “Oxygen Destroyer” was newly meaningful. “Godzilla vs Destoroyah” is a good example of how to replace the “origin” story later.

冒頭でゴジラと同族のリトルゴジラの二頭が生息していたバース島が爆発する。これは「ゴジラ」(一九八四年版)」の大黒島の話ともつながる。そしてゴジラは「赤い竜」となって、いきなり香港に出現して破壊しつくす。バース島にあった天然ウランを吸収して、臨界状態なのだ。この赤いゴジラがふだんの黒いゴジラの対極として映画のなかで暴れまわる。

At the beginning, Godzilla and the family of Little Godzilla inhabit the Birth Island exploded. This is connected to the story of Daikoku Island of “Godzilla” (1984 version). And Godzilla becomes a “red dragon,” suddenly appears in Hong Kong and destroys it. It absorbs natural uranium on Birth Island and is in a critical state. 今回の中心は、テレビキャスターの山根ゆかり(石野陽子)と大学生の山根健吉(林泰文)の姉弟である。そこに物理学者の伊集院(辰巳琢郎)がからんでくる。彼は酸素を研究していて、ミクロオキシゲンという微小な酸素に新しいエネルギーの可能性を見出している。番組で楽観的な伊集院に対してゆかりは否定的な見解を述べる。ここでは科学の進歩に懐疑的な姉と、ゴジラにとらわれた弟がいる。弟の健吉はゴジラ学のレポートをインターネットを通じて送付したアメリカの学者に認められていた。

The center of this time is the sisters of TV caster Yukari Yamane (Yoko Ishino) and Kenkichi Yamane (Yasufumi Hayashi), a college student. There, a physicist Ijuin (Takuro Tatsumi) comes in. He is studying oxygen and finds a new energy of microoxygen in a small oxygen. Yukari gives a negative view of Ijuin, who is optimistic in the program. Here, there are skeptical sisters who are skeptical of science advancement and brother who are caught by Godzilla. His brother, Kenkichi, was recognized by American scholars who sent a report of Godzilla through the Internet.

山根姉弟は山根博士の養子となった大戸島の新吉の子供だった。「ゴジラ」で恵美子を中心に形成された疑似家族がそのまま引き継がれたことになる。だが、彼らの叔母として登場したのが尾形恵美子でなくて、山根恵美子であることは別の未来をたどったことを想像させる。尾形への言及は一切ないが、代わりに彼女が守ってきた家には、父親の山根博士と芹沢博士の影が濃厚に落ちている。山根博士の書斎が再現されているが、そこに芹沢博士の写真もある。もちろん東宝サイドとしては、尾形役の宝田明をすでに何本も怪獣映画に出してきたので、いまさら出せなかったわけだろうが、そのことによって、恵美子は父とさらに亡き人を偲ぶ女というかなり古風な像へと後退してしまった。あるいは芹沢博士への負い目で尾形との結婚に失敗した「出戻り」という可能性さえ読めてしまうのだ。だが、血はつながっていないが、恵美子は伊集院とやりあう山根ゆかりの叔母でもある。恵美子はもともと香山滋による『ゴジラ』の初期設定では「女戦士」と尾形から揶揄されるような「戦後世「代」の強い女性であったことはすでに指摘した。映画ではそれが父と娘の物語となってしまい、そうアマゾンした積極的な要素は別のところに置き換わっていた。今回はそうした積極性はゆかりに引き継がれている。

Sisters of Yamane was a child of Shinkichi in Odo Island, who was adopted by Dr. Yamane. The pseudo family formed around Emiko in “Godzilla” was taken over. However, it is imagined that Emiko Yamane, not Emiko Ogata, appeared as their aunt. There is no mention of Ogata, but instead the house she has protected has the shadow of his father, Dr. Yamane and Dr. Serizawa. Of course, the Toho side has already released a number of monster movies with Akira Takarada, the role of Ogata. Perhaps he couldn’t get into it anymore, but as a result, Emiko has retreated to a fairly old-fashioned statue of his father and a woman who remembers the deceased. Or you can read the possibility of “return,” who failed to marry Ogata with the negative eyes of Dr. Serizawa. However, the blood is not connected, but Emiko is also an aunt related to Yamane, who works with Ijuin. Emiko has already pointed out that he was a “post-war” woman in the war, which was originally derided by Ogata in the initial setting of “Godzilla” by Shigeru Kayama. 『ゴジラ』では尾形の未来の妻であり、山根博士や田辺博士の助手をやっている恵美子がもってい特徴は、昭和シリーズでは、「男性の仕事を補完しつつ言いなりにならない女」となっていた。平成シリーズでは「ゴジラと戦い倒そうとする男」に対立して「ゴジラ=自然を理解し守る女」となる。その代表として三枝未希というテレパシーを使ってゴジラと感応する女性がずっと姿を見せていた。テレパシーで怪獣と会話ができるという「モスラ』の小美人から続く、女性の観客を取り込もうとする狙いが続いていた。それがミレニアムシリーズでは軍人として「ゴジラと戦う女」が前面に出てくる。

In Godzilla, Ogata’s future wife, and Emiko, who is the assistant of Dr. Yamane and Dr. Tanabe, is the “woman who complements the male work and is unprecedented” in the Showa series. ゴジラ映画は戦後の女性のキャリアパスの変更に合わせて、作品のなかでの扱いや設定を変えてきたわけだ。タイアップしていたソニーの製品が、ラジカセからポータブルのテレビやノートパソコンに代わっていくようなものだ。軍人や科学者といった戦う男性像があまり変化をしないのに対して、女性像の変遷からは、たとえ子供向け作品であっても時代に合わせて新しい姿を選んできたことがわかる。

それに対して「ゴジラVSデストロイア」での山根恵美子は、彼女自身が過去からの警告の声となってしまう。芹沢博士の「オキシジェン・デストロイヤー」と伊集院の「ミクロオキシゲン」が似通っているのを指摘し、別の形で恐ろしい兵器が復活しようとしているとゆかりに告げる。ゆかりが再び接触する伊集院は、東京湾の下での建設工事現場でおきた異変から、オキシジェン・デストロイヤーの影響を受けた四十年前の地層を調べることになる。酸素の研究をする以上、芹沢博士のことは念頭にあったと伊集院は言うが、同時に地層にも興味をもっていた。伊集院は地質学が専門の山根博士と、化学者の芹沢博士の二つの面を引き継いでいるわけだ。

Emiko Yamane in “Godzilla vs. Destoroyah” will be a warning from the past.
