The self-named “Dai-Toho” was to distinguish it from “Shin-Toho,” which was divided in the Toho dispute, but the expression “surpassing American films” was also a Toho-like pride. Even after this, the words “We are proud of the world” will be put on the trailers of special effects works many times. I can feel the momentum of expanding overseas from here. In fact, the movie “Godzilla” itself was born from the setbacks of a Japanese-Indonesian co-production. Toho’s film production did not focus solely on the Japanese market. The trailer oozes the feeling of catching up with and surpassing the Western powers in the post-war recovery period (which also existed before the war). On February 2, 1954, Japan Airlines opened its Pacific route, and the Douglas 6B “City of Tokyo” with the national flag took off for San Francisco (However, the captain was an American). As if to reflect this, in the main story, when Godzilla’s investigation teams arrive from various countries, Japan Airlines planes appear among the planes of overseas airlines such as Pan Am.

The moving Godzilla and the contents of “Godzilla,” which were imprinted in people’s minds, albeit fragmentarily, by these trailers, were haunting them as a kind of shadow by the time the release date was approached. With a media mix advertising system in place, such as radio dramas and children’s picture stories, preparations to welcome Godzilla on November 3rd were complete.

Godzilla Globalization

In this book, no matter how much I talk about related things, I will try to focus on the first movie “Godzilla” and the first monster Godzilla (hereinafter “Godzilla” refers to this work). This is not only to pay tribute to the film, which celebrated its 60th birthday, but also because the film that became the “origin” has elements that cannot be fully explained by the role at that time alone. If classics are meant to be consumed as a fad for a moment and have a never-ending experience, then 1954’s “Godzilla” is already a modern classic. And the classics survive through being found new meanings in later generations and being reproduced.

Even so, if it’s basic information about “Godzilla” itself, it’s detailed in the “Godzilla” item on Wikipedia, and the excavation of the Godzilla production process is progressing. There is already a definitive edition called “Godzilla Birth.” Kohei Nomura’s “Godzilla Encyclopedia” provides comprehensive information on the basics of Godzilla movies. Regarding modeling, there is also a cutting method like “Morphological Kaijuron” by Shinichiro Kobayashi, a dentist and the original creator of “Godzilla vs. Biollante.” There are books that return stories to the real world and discuss the results of the Self-Defense Forces’ battle against Godzilla, and cultural theories and society that analyze Godzilla. The theories are too numerous to mention, and it can be said that there are a mountain of monster encyclopedias and mook books on tokusatsu.

Moreover, Godzilla’s influence extends far beyond Japan. For example, the nickname that Hideki Matsui got when he was a high school baseball player remained popular even after he moved to the United States, thanks to Godzilla’s name recognition. It was introduced as “Hideki Gazzira Matsui.” There is an American company called Mozilla Foundation that develops browsers for use on the Internet, but this is derived from “Mosaic” and “Godzilla.” A second Hollywood Godzilla movie was also made. It would be impossible to talk about “Godzilla” without ignoring its relationship with foreign countries, especially the United States. English doujinshi such as “G-Fan” and thick English-language literature that provides biographical analysis of not only Godzilla movies but also Eiji Tsuburaya and Ishiro Honda are increasing.

Colette Balmain, a British film researcher, wrote “Introduction to Japanese Horror Films” (2008) as a set of “Godzilla” and “Ugetsu Monogatari” as “post-Hiroshima horror,” using the Japanese word “within” and analyzed in detail using the concept of “outside.” When he read this, he nodded involuntarily. Aside from the fact that I think he would have had a sharper analysis if he knew the phrase “Demons outside, fortune inside,” rather than selfish theories and assumptions on the British side, and understanding the other person’s context, he was surprised by the research that he analyzed after finding out the Japanese keywords.
