Honda Ishiro and “Alain”

It was one movie that made Ishiro Honda obsessed with depicting the sea for the rest of his life. Akio Jissoji, who directed special effects such as “Ultraman,” touches on this situation in his essay “Dream Kingdom Dansho Eiji Tsuburaya Praise.” He points out that the combination of Honda and Tsuburaya had excellent communication. Then, he checked the cuts of Godzilla’s first landing in Shinagawa and admired how the main part of the drama and the special effects part were blended by the method of achieving the effect with a small number of cuts.

Akio Jissoji was a Japanese television and film director best known outside Japan for the 1960s TV series Ultraman and Ultraseven, as well as for his auteur erotic ATG-produced Buddhist trilogy Mujō, Mandala, and Uta. (Source: Wikipedia)

For Honda, one starting point was Man of Aran (1934) by Canadian documentary filmmaker Robert J. Flaherty. “Aran” depicts the life of a family of fishermen living on the island of Aran in Ireland. Since both of these works include directing, they have received mixed reviews for their recordability and truthfulness. Honda and Jissoji’s interest in Flaherty’s “Far North” and “Aran,” who also made industrial films, shows the deep connection between documentary films and special effects films.

Man of Aran (アラン) This documentary presents life on Ireland’s Aran Islands, a beautiful, rugged, and remote locale where survival was a constant struggle. Featuring scenic shots of seaside cliffs and rocky expanses, the film, which takes a few fictional liberties, shows islanders fishing and farming in inventive ways in order to keep food on their tables. While some dramatic moments reveal a sense of narrative, the main draw of the production is the stunning scenery. (Source: Man of Aran)

As one of the ways in which movies are made, new works are sometimes born based on documentary material. In Honda’s “The Man Who Came to the Port” (1952), the company still had the film taken on board a whaling ship, so considering the use of that film, a story with a whaling sailor as the main character was created. The use of existing stock film is remarkable for war stories and the like. In the war stories “Operation Kamikaze” (1953) and “Farewell to Rabaul: The Last Fighter” (1954) directed by Honda, during actual battles such as aerial battles, a live action scene that was filmed comes out.

Movies are made by quoting multiple sources such as news footage. It has been pointed out that in the latter half of the Showa series of Godzilla movies, past images are reused due to a lack of budget, but this is the same as in the case of Honda’s war story. Films are essentially compilations of material from different origins. The feature of Toho monster movie ‘picture’ is that the two different modes of ‘drama main story’ and ‘special effects’ collide and merge. At the top of that was the duo of Ishiro Honda and Eiji Tsuburaya.

Honda was fascinated by “Aran,” which depicted the threat posed by the rough waves of the Atlantic Ocean as a whole, such as a scene where a shark and a fisherman fight, and a scene where a huge wave spray hits. The awe of the sublime scenery of the sea turns into admiration at the same time. The fact that it leaves a strong impression can be seen from the fact that he told Jissoji that “special effects are for depicting the battle against nature.”

However, even if Godzilla is an extension of the threat of nature, for some reason it invites war through the sea. It may have been a big turning point for him to have directed two war stories before “Godzilla.” “Farewell Rabaul” is also a story about an air force, but in the end, the main character, a pilot, sacrifices himself to protect the salvage ship on which his lover is on board. The scene where the female chorus sings “Rabaul Kouta” like a ballad on the ship, as if mourning his death, is impressive. The scene where the female chorus sings on the ship is connected to the chorus of the female students’ prayer for peace that touched Dr. Serizawa’s heart in “Godzilla.”

Ishiro Honda cannot be regarded as a simple pacifist because he photographs the sea based on the certain charm and horror of war. He confesses to Jissoji the episode that shows the starting point. In 1940, Honda was engaged in a guerilla mopping-up operation on Mt. Paektu on the border of China and North Korea. From the top of the mountain, he sees people fleeing from the guns fired by the Japanese army, and notices a beautiful silhouette of a bellflower beside him. “I was overwhelmed by the thought that humans would kill each other in such fine weather among the flowers,” he told Jissoji.

Here we can catch a glimpse of the special qualities of Ishiro Honda’s works. It does not bring up easy correspondences and metaphors between man-made and nature. This is probably why it didn’t fall into the moral interpretation of seeing monsters as metaphors for ugly human desires. Like a documentary filmmaker, he has a cold eye for human reaction. What’s more, Honda Ishiro, who can be said to be a taciturn craftsman director, sometimes speaks fluently, not in the shots of creatures such as humans and monsters, but in the shots of the sea and waves.

One could argue that the reason why there are so many sea and water scenes is to make the most of Toho Studios’ gigantic swimming pool. But that’s not all. Flaherty’s “Twenty-Four Dollar Land” (1927), a film of Manhattan, depicts harbors and ships, and “Louisiana Story” (1948) depicts the water surface of the southern marshes is beautiful. In response to this, director Ishiro Honda, in “The Great Monster in the Sky Rodan” (1956), created a bridge collapsed by Rodan flying at high speed, and the water surface that catches it. 8 years), such as the ripples that Varan flew off the coast of Haneda, and the beautiful wake drawn by the ship heading for Infant Island in “Mothra” (1961), including Eiji Tsuburaya’s special effects, he created a video that makes use of the scene where the sea and waves appear. He was making a video that makes use of the scene where comes out. There is a commitment to the sea level inherited from Flaherty. It was 1954’s “Godzilla” that began and ended in the sea that clearly defined such an effect.
