本名・小野田昭彦。1927年12月16日生まれ、平城生まれ。兄は、新東宝の映画監督、姉は歌手。夫人は久我美子、兄嫁は三ツ矢歌子。

His real name is Akihiko Onoda. Born December 16, 1927 in Heijo. His older brother is a film director for Shin Toho, and his older sister is a singer. His wife is Yoshiko Kuga, and his sister-in-law is Utako Mitsuya.

東京陸軍幼年学校、陸軍士官学校、東大法学部を卒業。東大在学中から、新東宝で助監督見習いのバイトをする。卒業後の53年、女優・山口淑子の勧めにより俳優として新東宝入社。三船敏郎主演の『抱擁」でデビュー。同年、『鉄腕涙あり』で初主演。84年7月25日午前11時25分、ガン性リンパ管症のため永眠。享年56歳。

He graduated from Tokyo Military Junior School, Military Academy, and University of Tokyo Faculty of Law. While still a student at the University of Tokyo, he worked as an apprentice assistant director at Shin Toho. After graduating in 1953, he joined Shin Toho as an actor at the recommendation of actress Yoshiko Yamaguchi. He made his debut with Toshiro Mifune’s “Hugaku.” In the same year, he starred for the first time in “Tetsuwan Namida Ari.” He passed away at 11:25 am on July 25, 1984 due to cancerous lymphangiosis. He was 56 years old.

日本特撮映画を語る時にはずすことのできない俳優を何人か選ぶとすれば、まず筆頭に挙げられるのは、平田昭彦だろう。『ゴジラ』出演以来、二十本以上の特撮SF映画に出演、いずれの作品でも、実に強い印象を残している。

If we were to pick out a few actors who cannot be left out when discussing Japanese special effects films, the first would be Akihiko Hirata. Since appearing in “Godzilla,” he has appeared in more than 20 special-effects sci-fi films, all of which have left a truly strong impression.

みずからも、「怪獣にはロマンがある。怪獣が出てくる特撮映画が好き」と語っていた平田昭彦。その魅力を、三つの役柄を分析することによって、探っていくことにしよう。

洋館の研究室には、得体のしれない実験器具や大きな水槽が並んでいる。そして、そこに立つ白衣の若い男。その右目には、戦争の傷跡を隠す黒い眼帯が……。

The Western-style laboratory is lined with mysterious experimental equipment and large water tanks. And a young man in a white coat standing there. His right eye has a black eyepatch that hides the scars of war…

『ゴジラ』の芹沢大介博士のイメージは、日本における後のマッドサイエンティスト絵柄を決定づけるほど強烈なものだった。

The image of Dr. Daisuke Serizawa in “Godzilla” was so strong that it determined the later mad scientist picture in Japan.

しかし映画の中の芹沢博士は、マッドどころか、優秀な頭脳と繊細なハートを合わ持つ、悩める若き天才だったのだ。

However, Dr. Serizawa in the movie is far from being a madman, but rather a troubled young genius with an excellent brain and a sensitive heart.

芹沢は自らが発明した核兵器をしのぐ新しい武器、オキシジェンデストロイヤーが為政者の手にわたることに「科学者として、いや一個の人間としてそれを反対するのがわれわれの任務じゃないか」と主張し、ついには「ああ······こんな物さえ作らなければ･･････」と、慟哭する。テレビから流れる乙女の祈りに心を動かされて、長年の研究の成果を火にくべ、さらに「もしも、何らかの形で使用されることを強制されたとしたならば、僕は僕の死とともにこの研究を消滅させてしまう決心なのです」という言葉の通り、ゴジラの死とともに自らの命をも絶ってしまうのだ。

Serizawa argued that the Oxygen Destroyer, a new weapon that surpassed the nuclear weapons that had been invented, was in the hands of politicians, saying, “As scientists, no, as individuals, it is our duty to oppose it.” “Ah… I have to make something like this…” he cried. Moved by the maiden’s prayer on TV, he put the results of his years of research to the fire, and added: “I am determined to annihilate Godzilla.” Just as he said, he took his own life along with Godzilla’s death.

平田は後にテレビ『ウルトラマン』(1966~67)で、ジェットビートルを設計し、ゼットンを倒すペンシル爆弾を発明す岩本博士を演じている。輝かしい科学と未来の象徴としての彼こそは、戦争という呪縛から抜け出すことのできた、芹沢博士のもう一つの姿だったのかもしれない。

Hirata later played Dr. Iwamoto in the television series Ultraman (1966-67), who designed the Jet Beetle and invented the pencil bomb that would defeat Zetton. As a symbol of brilliant science and the future, he may have been another version of Dr. Serizawa who was able to break free from the curse of war.

『美女と液体人間』の富永警部、『電送人間』の小林警部、『三大怪獣地球最大の決戦』の沖田課長と、スマートな身のこなしや都会的なセンスを生かした、警察関係の役も、平田が得意とするところだった。こうした役柄では、平田の魅力の一つである、表情の豊かさも十分に発揮された。沖田課長の場合、扇子で顔をあおぎながら、部下の報告を聞く。不思議な謎にぶつかって、じっと考え込む。思わぬ新事実に、驚きをあらわにする。突然の悲劇に、沈痛な面もちを見せる、などなど。

Inspector Tominaga in “The H-Man,” Inspector Kobayashi in “The Secret of the Telegian,” and Chief Okita in “Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster” was also Hirata’s specialty. In such a role, one of Hirata’s charms, the richness of facial expressions, was fully demonstrated. In the case of Section Chief Okita, he listens to reports from his subordinates while fanning his face with a fan. As he encounters a strange mystery, he ponders. He reveal the surprise at unexpected new facts. A sudden tragedy he shows a sorrowful look, and so on.

ほかの役柄の時にはなかなか見せないような自然な表情が、この時とばかりにスクリーンにひろがる。どちらかというとあまりめだたない、日常的な役柄でこそ、平田は自分自身をのびのびと演じることができたのではないだろうか。

A natural expression that is rarely shown in other roles spreads on the screen just like this time. It seems that Hirata was able to play himself freely in a role that was rather unremarkable and everyday.

Villain

真船信三
Shinzo Mafune

基本的に善なる役を演じることの多かった平田だが、数少ない悪役はいずれも鬼気せまる迫力をもったキャラとなっている。

Hirata usually plays good roles, but the villains, who are few in number, are all terrifyingly powerful.

たとえば、『海底軍艦』のムウ帝国工作隊23号。『ゴジラ・エビラ・モスラ南海の大決闘』の〝赤い竹〟の竜尉隊長。そして『メカゴジラの逆襲』では、悪役科学者・真船博士という、平田にあつらえられたような役柄を得る。

For example, Mu Agent No. 23 from “Atragon,” Captain of the “Red Bamboo” in “Ebirah, Horror of the Deep,” And in “Terror of MechaGodzilla,” he gets the role of villainous scientist Dr. Mafune, which seems to have been tailored to Hirata.

15年前に学会を追放されたこ恨みに、ブラックホール第3惑星人も認める頭脳でチタノザウルスを復活させたり、メカゴジラを改修したりと、まさにマッドサイエンティストと呼ぶにふさわしい大活躍。(回想シーンの若き博士もかっこいい!)

In spite of being expelled from the academic society 15 years ago, he revived the Titanosaurus with the brains recognized by Aliens from the Third Planet of the Black Hole, he refurbished MechaGodzilla, and he made great achievements worthy of being called a mad scientist. (The young doctor in the flashback scene is also cool!)

白髪に白衣、眼鏡というスタイルで「今こそ奴らに思い知らせてやる。私を抹殺し馬鹿者どもに必ず復讐してやるのだ」「私は私の力を試したいのだ。私の正しさを証明してみせたいのだ」と笑い、娘の桂のサイボーグ化に涙を流すことはあっても、自分の行動には最後まで自信を持ち続ける、その悪役ぶりはもはや独壇場。

Wearing white hair, a white coat, and glasses, he said, “Now is the time to let them know. I’ll kill you and take revenge on those idiots.” I want to show it to you,” laughing, and even though he cries when his daughter Katsura turns into a cyborg, he maintains confidence in his own actions until the very end, and his villainy is already unrivaled.

平田の悪役といえば、テレビにも忘れられないふたりのキャラがいる。『愛の戦士レインボーマン』(1972~73)のミスタIKと、『大鉄人17』(1978)のキャプテン・ゴメスだ。

Speaking of Hirata’s villains, there are two unforgettable characters on TV. They are Mr. IK in “Love Warrior Rainbowman” (1972-73) and Captain Gomez in “Daitetsujin 17” (1978).

ミスターKは、日本人皆殺しをたくらむ”死ね死ね団”の首領。変装の名人で、スタイリストの伊達男。さらに冷酷で激情家。

Mr. K is the leader of the “death group” that plans to kill all Japanese people. Date man who is a master of disguise and a stylist. He is even more ruthless and passionate.

一方キャプテン・ゴメスは、竜尉隊長の流れを引く軍人悪役で、自らが幹部であるブレイン党のボスの座をねらう策略家だ。平田は実に楽しそうに演じ、その結果どちらも名悪役キャラとなっている。

Captain Gomez, on the other hand, is a military villain who follows the lineage of the dragon captain, and is a strategist who aims to become the boss of the Blaine Party, of which he is an executive. Hirata seems to have a lot of fun playing them, and as a result, both have become great villains.

悪の魅力は、ときに正義の輝きより美しい。平田の演技における余裕が、その魅力を何倍にもしていたのだろう。

The charm of evil is sometimes more beautiful than the brilliance of justice. The leeway in Hirata’s acting must have multiplied its charm.

平田昭彦の次回作は、『ゴジラ』(1984)の東都日報・伍堂編集局長役(佐藤慶が演じた)の予定だった。55歳というあまりに早すぎる死は、もはや悔やんでも悔やみようもない。しかし、ゴジラを愛し、育てた心はこれからもスタッフや俳優達の心の中に生き続けるに違いない。

Akihiko Hirata’s next work was scheduled to play the role of Toto Nippo’s editor-in-chief Godo (played by Kei Sato) in “Godzilla” (1984). At the age of 55, he died too early, and there is no way to regret it anymore. However, the heart that loved and nurtured Godzilla will surely continue to live in the hearts of the staff and actors.
