ゴジラのぬいぐるみにひとが入って、ミニチュアの町やプールのなかを動きまわることをスーツメーションという。それを高速度撮えいすると、ほんものの町や海で巨大なゴジラがあばれているように見えるのだ。

Suitmation is when a person enters a stuffed Godzilla and moves around in a miniature town or pool. When taken at high speed, it looks like a huge Godzilla in a real town or sea.

ぬいぐるみの中はあついぞ。
The inside of the stuffed animal is hot.

▲ 撮えいのあいだにひとやすみ。
▲ Taking a break while shooting.

スタジオにつくったプールで撮えい中。
He is taking a picture at a pool in the studio.

▶︎ これから大あばれがはじまる。
▶ ︎ The big storm begins now.

◀︎ ミ原山の火口でゴジラが足をすべらせるシーンは、ぬいぐるみをロープでぶらさげて撮えいした。
◀︎ The scene where Godzilla slips at the crater of Mt. Mihara was shot with a stuffed animal hanging with a rope.

P 34

ピアノ線でジェット機やヘリコプターのミニチュアモデルをつるしたり、リモートコントロールで戦車のミニチュアモデルを走らせたりしょて、ほんものが動いているように見せることを、操演という。

Using a piano wire to hang a miniature model of a jet or helicopter, or using a remote control to run a miniature model of a tank, is called maneuvering.

海のシーンでは、プールを使う。機械を使ってこまかい波をたてると、ほんとうの海のように見えてくるのだ。

In the sea scene, the pool was used. When you use machines to create detailed waves, they look like a real sea.

ぼくたちも操演をやるぞ。
We will also perform.

▲ せん水艦をつるして、海底から見たシーンを撮えいしている。
▲ Hanging a watercraft and shooting a scene seen from the sea floor.

◀︎ スタジオの天じょうに木のわくをんで、ここからミニチュアをぶらさげる。
◀︎ Put a wooden frame in the studio electric field and hang a miniature from here.

ヘリコプターはピアノ線でつるす。
A helicopter hangs on the piano wire.

▲ 撮えい用のプール。ポンプやせん風機でこまかい波をおこす。
▲ Swimming pool for shooting. Raise a fine wave with a pump or wind blower.

▼ スーパーXも、ピアノ線でつるされている。カメラもつるして、飛行するところを正面から撮えいして。
▼ Super X is also suspended by piano wire. They hang the camera and take a picture of where it flying from the front.

▲ カメラをプールにうかべて、大黒島のそばをとおる八幡丸を撮えいしている。
▲ He takes a camera to the pool and shoots Hamakatsuura passing by Daikoku Island.

A gunpowder switch that has been set on Daikoku Island.

Special effects

ビルのミニチュアに電球を入れて、まどのあかりにしたり、ヘリコプターや自動車のライトをつけることを電飾という。

A light bulb is put in miniature buildings, lighting a helicopter or car is called illumination.

火薬やガソリンをしかけて、ばく発させたり燃やしたりすることを弾着という。このふたつは、特殊効果のしごとだ。

Explosion or burning by applying gunpowder or gasoline is called ammunition. These two are the work of special effects.

▶︎ 電飾されたビルディング。
▶ ︎ Illuminated building.

▲ 板にあなをあけて光を出すと、まるで夜の町のようだ。
If you make a hole in the board and emit light, it looks like a city at night.

▼ ビルのなかにしこまれた電球。
A light bulb embedded in a building.

▶︎ 大ばく発したガソリン。ひじょうにきけんなシーンだ。
A big gasoline explosion. It’s a very dangerous scene.

◀︎ ▶︎ 火薬のばく発で、ゴジラとスーパーXのはげしい戦いのシーンを撮えいした。
With gunpowder exposure, they shot the scene of a fierce battle between Godzilla and the Super X.

たてもののかげにしかけられた火薬だま。
A gunpowder ball in the shadow of a building.

▲ ガソリンぶくろ。電気をとおすと燃えあがるのだ。
Gasoline bag. It burns when electricity is passed.

合成と編集

Compositing and editing

バラバラに撮えいされたフィルムを、はなしのとおりにつなくことを編集という。本編（役者をうつしたところ）と特撮をうまくつなげるのだ。

Editing is the process of connecting films taken apart as they are. A good connection between the main story (where the actors are transmitted) and special effects.

また、とくべつにはくりょくシーンを見えせるためには、いくつかのシーンをかけあわれる。これが合成だ。

Also, in order to make the scenes particularly visible, several scenes are shared. This is synthesis.

ゴジラが放射火炎をはく。
Godzilla emits a radiation flame.

放射火炎は、アニメーションで撮えいする。
Radiant flame is created with animation.

ひとびとが立っている。
People are standing.

ゴジラがおきあがる。
Godzilla rises.

合成され、ゴジラが放射火炎をはく。
Synthesized, Godzilla emits radiant flame

大きく口をあけたゴジラがうつされる。
With a big open mouth Godzilla fires.

合成され、ひとびとがゴジラにおどろいている。
Synthesized, people are surprised by Godzilla.

◀︎ オプチカルプリンターにふたつのフィルムががけられ、はくりょくシーンが合成される。
Two films are applied to the optical printer, and the scene is synthesized.

◀︎ 編集されたフィルムに、音楽やせりふが入り、えい画が完成する。
The edited film contains music and dialogue, and the movie is completed.

ゴジラは空想上の動物です。たくさんのスタッフの努力によって、ゴジラは映画のなかであばれます。ゴジラの動きを見てください。必死でわが身を守ろうとするとき、そこに動物の躍動感のうつくしさがあります。このように、「能」の動きをゴジラに託したみました。裹方さんたちのしごとが、ここで発揮されたのです。

Godzilla is a fantasy animal. Thanks to the efforts of a lot of staff, Godzilla appears in the movie. Look at Godzilla’s movement. When desperately trying to protect myself, there is the beauty of the dynamism of animals. In this way, I entrusted the movement of “Noh”[theatre] to Godzilla. The behind the scenes work is demonstrated here.

ゴジラが、文明都市＝東京の象徴である超高層ビルをこわるのは、人類のおごりたかぶりをいましめるためです。しかしゴジラは、その巨体ゆえに、悲しい生き物なのです。ゴジラ自身は、なにも悪いことなどしているつもりはないのですから。

Godzilla destroyed a skyscraper, civilized city = a skyscraper that is a symbol of Tokyo.　This is to admonish mankind’s reputation. But Godzilla is a sad creature because of its huge body. Godzilla doesn’t mean to do anything wrong.

私にとって、映画とは自己表現だと思います。また、ハイテクノロジー時代のいまこそ、夢や冒険やロマンが必要なのではないかと思います。そして、特殊撮影は、映画「ゴジラ」をつくるための、夢や冒険やロマンという味つけをする調味料なのだと思います。

For me, a movie is self-expression. Also, in the age of high technology, I think that we need dreams, adventures, and romance. And I think that special photography is a seasoning that adds flavor to dreams, adventures, and romance to create the movie “Godzilla”.

この映画は、ぜひ御家族そろって見て楽しんでください。そして、みんなで話しあってください。「ゴジラ」を見てなにかを感じとっていただけたら、こんなに嬉しいことはありません。

Please enjoy watching this movie with your family. And please talk with everyone. If you look at “Godzilla” and feel something, you will not be so happy.
