The Ultimate MechaGodzilla Keepsake

A car is identified by its manufacturer logo. Mercedes, Rolls Royce, Jaguar, etc. What’s MechaGodzilla’s most iconic and identifying mark? Superman has an “S” on his chest and Batman has his bat. MechaGodzilla has his “MG.” And now owners of the Godzilla Anniversary 4K Remaster Box Set can have it too. And those to whom they sell it. The perfect takeaway after seeing the surviving remains of the Showa MechaGodzilla 1974 & 1975 on display at the Tokusatsu Exhibit in Ueda last year. Learn More | 6/26

MyKaiju The Daily: Yamazaki vs Shin Godzilla

Yamazaki vs. Shin Godzilla

The film Godzilla -1.0 is very much the result of Director Takashi Yamazaki versus Shin Godzilla. In the recent interview, “Godzilla 1.0: Director Takashi Yamazaki on the secret to making a hit bigger than the previous film”, he discussed the challenge of following Shin Godzilla, directed by Hideaki Anno. “I felt a strong need to compete with the previous Godzilla film, Shin Godzilla. It was almost a feeling of fear. I personally approve of Shin Godzilla, and it has been highly praised by the public.” Not only facing technical difficulties in making a Godzilla movie, the release of a new movie faced less interest. “When I was approached about this Godzilla film, I felt a sense of crisis that if things continued like this, the Godzilla flame would go out. In fact, no new films had been made for seven years. I think that’s because everyone was afraid to make one after Shin Godzilla” But he had drawn the short straw and was called upon to direct the next Godzilla. But this fear of Shin Godzilla was “a big plus” and fueled his determination and effort. Director Yamazaki went in the opposite direction of Shin Godzilla in order to differentiate his work. He made his Godzilla film full of human drama and “ultra-emotional.” He intentionally set his film in a different time and place, focusing upon Godzilla at sea rather than on land. His story was set in a unique period, just after World War II, which he was very familiar with and at home. Yamazaki said, “I just tried to make a difference by digging deep into the other side of Shin Godzilla…. In a sense, Godzilla-1.0 is a strategic product, isn’t it? To combat Shin Godzilla.” In the end, Director Yamazaki made an Oscar-winning film, not only worthy of following Shin Godzilla but also raising the bar even higher. Lights! Camera! Kids!

Godzilla and MechaGodzilla frolicking up the road should be familiar to fans of their first movie. On March 16-17, 1974 (a week after my birthday), the Tokai Kisen “Godzilla’s coming-of-age ceremony (『東海汽船』『大島でゴジラの成人式』) was held on Oshima, where the duo visited the Fujikura Gakuen Shrine by ferry. During the promotional campaign, MechaGodzilla was surrounded by a large group of children. Singer Bellbella Lin, who plays Princess Nami, was there also to keep the two apart. Now we have the video (ちびっ子にフラフラ ゴジラ “Godzilla wandering around with the little ones”) of the event from the new Godzilla Anniversary 4K Remaster Box Set release! 1 2 3 | Sources: 昭和メカゴジラ鋼鉄図鑑, ゴジラ東宝チャンピオンまつりパーフィクション & Wikipedia | Video Source: @4k_Kaijueiga | 6.22

A Dying Wish

Not all figures are made well nor equal. And some are very disappointing. But when the X-Plus Toho 30cm Series Yuji Sakai Sculpture Collection Godzilla (1995) Last Scene was announced, my wish for a figure to capture Godzilla’s final moments came true. After a long stay in the Buyee Japan warehouse, my Godzilla Junior has appeared in all his father’s glory. This towering figure is no disappointment. It has great eyes, teeth, paint application and detail. Every angle captures DesuGoji/Junior perfectly. This impressive soft vinyl version of the Yuji Sakai resin kit does justice to the original and the closing scene of Godzilla vs Destoroyah (1995). This quickly has become a top ten figure in my collection. I hope you get one. 6.22

MyTV in 1973

Growing up, what did you do on Saturday? I was “Growing up on Godzilla.” On this weekend in 1979, I was up bright and early at 7 to watch Animals, Animal Animals on Channel 6 followed by Captain Noah and His Magical Ark, Marlo and the Magic Movie Machine on Channel 10, then to Channel 3 for Fantastic Four, and finally Godzilla Super 90 at 9 am. All this was the preamble for the afternoon showing of Godzilla vs The Smog Monster on Channel 48 at 2:20 pm on Saturday, June 23. TV Guide | 6.21

Blast from the Past

Last year at RetroCon I found a brand new working JCPenney All-Channel black-and-white portable television (above) in the box just like the one I had growing up in the late 70s. This is the “Solid State Black & White Television” with a 12″ picture and weighing only 15-3/4 lbs. The booklet promises low power consumption operating at only 28 watts. Inside is a single chassis circuit board that warms up fast and delivers a sharp, bright picture about six seconds after the set is turned on. It has dual-function VHF/UHF antenna and fidelity-engineered sound from a 3″ round speaker. This set was manufactured in 1978 and retailed in the JCPenney Christmas Book for $84. 6.21

終 (The End)

The Tale of Two Endings

Did you hear that?! Growing up, I hated King Kong vs Godzilla (1962) because that was not what I heard. And for that reason I assumed that Kong defeated and killed Godzilla. There was hope because I also grew up reading that there were two endings, one for Japan and the U.S produced by John Beck. In the Japanese version Godzilla won but in the U.S. version Kong. But many years later the myth of two endings was debunked. However, there are different endings but not as it had been explained and as I imagined. In both, after tumbling into the ocean, Kong returns home and Godzilla does not resurface. Yet, the U.S. release omitted one important thing. The difference between the two versions is not in what was seen but in what was not heard. As a kid, I saw United Nations reporter Eric Charter’s closing remark, “Godzilla has disappeared without a trace” followed by Kong roaring as he swam away. Now as an adult I can watch the Japanese version. In that ending, as Kong swims away, Godzilla roars followed by Kong’s roar. This is big and there are two endings! Godzilla’s roar leaves no doubt that he alive. The U.S. version edited out Godzilla’s roar, misleading American audiences to believe Kong won and suggesting Godzilla was dead. Godzilla was not only alive, but he was not defeated. In subsequent Godzilla books, their famous battle was ruled a draw and tie. Godzilla won the first round and Kong won the last. As a Philly native, I’m reminded of Rocky II (1979) when both boxers, Rocky Balboa and Apollo Creed, exhausted in the final round, fall to the canvas at the same time. Balboa regains his feet before the ten count expires. So Rocky won. Similarly, the fight between Kong and Godzilla ends with their fall into the sea. Although Kong emerges from the sea, Godzilla retreats underground while roaring. He has no need to go home because he is already home. They part ways and return to their respective corners. Godzilla survives to fight another day. My childhood trauma has ended (終/笑). Watch Eng Version | Watch Original JP Version | 6.16

The
Anatomy
of An
Attack

I have walked the streets of Ginza many times and occasions over the years but its awesomeness didn’t hit me until I saw this shot from the Yamanote Line juxtaposed with this moment in Godzilla -1.0. This most iconic Godzilla path of destruction begins with the Wako Building (formerly the Hattori Watch Shop 服部時計店 and functioned as the Tokyo PX store during the Allied Occupation from 1945 to 1952) and ends at the Nichigeki Theater (now the Yurakucho Center Building). These places have been etched in our minds since Godzilla first appeared in 1954 and his return in 1984. Then Yamazaki took us back to 1947 to see Godzilla’s unforgettable attack on Ginza. There my memories began in 1994. Over the next 30 years I returned to attend Godzilla Fes, to visit Godzilla Square, to screen a Godzilla movie and more. Standing on the corner of Hibiya Godzilla Square my mind recalls those movie moments etched in my memories and my imagination runs wild seeing Godzilla bounce off the Toho Cinema Building swooping up the Shinkansen whizzing by. I’ve seen Godzilla (2023) drive by and look down from a poster on the passersby. Such a special Godzilla walk for every fan should experience. Director Yamazaki and his team went to great lengths to recreate the streets of Ginza in 1947. Here are maps detailing Godzilla’s attack on Ginza moment by moment in Minus One: Map 1 | Map 2. Before you take a trip, take a scroll! Photo: @masawo_tokusatu | Watch | 6.13

Director Takashi Yamazaki

“The point of international Godzilla is that he’s a really powerful monster, but a Japanese Godzilla is halfway a godlike creature in many ways. Not necessarily a religious god, but more like a Japanese god, a malevolent and destructive one. He’s a metaphor for nuclear weapons, war—you could view [him as] Covid in this film—the nuclear power plant in Shin Godzilla, and that metaphor for these incidents is important to a Japanese Godzilla like this.”
— Director Takashi Yamazaki

Godzilla
Books

From the Bookshelf

Here are some of my favorite books that might be worth having on your Godzilla bookshelves.

Godzilla Special Effects Site (特撮現場) was produced to commemorate the opening of the “Godzilla Exhibition” (Fukuoka Art Museum/Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art), and it focuses on the special effects scene of “Godzilla x Mothra x Mechagodzilla: Tokyo S.O.S.” This 100-page wide book (18.3cm height x 25.8cm width) was published by Hokkaido Shimbun Press in 2016. There are beautiful spreads of behind-the-scenes shots and set designs and schematics.

Japanese Godzilla books are a treasure trove. Use Google Translate and enjoy.

Hobby Japan’s The Pictorial Book of Godzilla (1995) by Masami Yamada is a two-volume set covering the types of Godzilla from 1954 to 1994 with over 1,100 photos. In 8mm Camera Special Effects Seed Book (1970), Hajime Tsuburaya, son of Eiji Tsuburya, covers many topics which include stop motion photography, matte shots, aerial photography, underwater photography, miniature work, special effects, animation, and much more. Techniques of Japanese Tokusatsu Films (Gakken Plus, 2016) is a groundbreaking research book that thoroughly explains the “secret techniques” of Japanese special effects from before the war to the present. It also included two Godzilla scripts. Toho Tokusatsu Movie History (1983, 554 pages) is a valuable collection of materials that only Toho could produce, covering all of Toho’s special effects-based films up until the year of publication. 6.8

“We thought: In what way can we put in images all these feelings into a fictional movie? To think about it was a matter that took us a very long time. I think that this new Godzilla is the result of all those feelings.”

Shin Godzilla Director Shinji Higuchi

Fiction from Reality

Shin Godzilla (2016) is more meaningful to me than any other Godzilla film. On Friday, March 11, 2011 at 2:46pm, three days after my birthday, about 1000 meters above sea-level, from a mountain in Lake New Town, Karuizawa, I along with the staff and students experienced what would be the existential crisis that birthed a new Godzilla in 2016. A beautiful day ended in one of the worst disasters to hit Japan, The Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, commonly referred to as 3.11. It was an unforgettable day that turned into a nuclear nightmare when the Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant reactors melted down. That was a very scary time that I describe as when “I met Godzilla.” The subsequent creation of Directors Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi was a cathartic and healing experience through which I exorcised the pinned-up memories, anxieties and fears that had resurfaced as I watched Godzilla evolve from an earthquake into a tsunami and finally into a nuclear terror. With the return of Shin Godzilla to the big screen, I can’t help but recall those memories that it so easily shook loose. I hope “Godzilla” remains on screen rather than reappearing in the real world. 6.4

Japan 3.11 / Fukushima Timeline

March 11, 2011: An Earthquake Precipitates Crisis

2:46 pm: The westward-moving Pacific Plate, an oceanic tectonic plate, lurches downwards beneath the Okhotsk plate along the Japan Trench, causing an earthquake of a magnitude of 9.1, making it the largest earthquake in Japan’s history.

3:27 pm: The earthquake sets off a tsunami. The first wave arrives at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in the form of a 13-foot-high wave.

3:35 pm: A second wave, this one over 50 feet high, breaches the wall.

3:37 pm: With flooding having destroyed the generator’s backup batteries.

Just before 6 pm: A work crew goes to the 4th floor of the Unit 1 reactor building without protective clothing. Their dosimeters read off-the-scale levels of radiation, indicating that the core of Unit 1 is exposed and its fuel rods ruptured.

7:03 pm: Prime Minister Naoto Kan declares a nuclear emergency.

9:00 pm: The Japanese government issues evacuation orders for the several thousand residents living within a 1.9-mile (3-kilometer) radius of the power plant.

March 12: Evacuation Area Expands, the Roof Blows

10:09 am: The Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) announces they have vented some steam from Unit 1 in an attempt to lower the temperature and pressure.
10:58 am: Unit 2, it is announced, has likewise been vented.

3:36 pm: A hydrogen explosion blows the roof of Unit 1, collapsing concrete walls and leaving behind only the steel framework.

Just before 6:30 pm: The evacuation area is expanded to a 12.4- mile (20-kilometer) radius.

8:20 pm: TEPCO begins injecting seawater into Unit 1, as a substitute coolant.

March 13

6:23 am: A NISA official announces that the emergency cooling system in the Unit 3 reactor has failed.

10:05 pm: TEPCO begins injecting seawater into Unit 3.

10:09 pm: TEPCO announces a plan to inject seawater into Unit 2, the first acknowledgment of an emergency at that reactor.

March 14: Explosions Continue

11:01 am: There’s a hydrogen explosion at the Unit 3 reactor. 11 workers are injured, and the building’s structure is severely damaged.

March 15

6:14 am: A hydrogen explosion occurs at the Unit 2 reactor.

Throughout the day: Seawater pumping continues at Units 1, 2 and 3.

March 17

The military begins using helicopters to dump seawater onto Unit 3, where radiation levels are at 17 millisieverts per hour.

March 20: Things Start to Stabilize

Temperatures stabilize at Units 5 and 6, bringing about the safe harbor of “cold shutdown” conditions. Electrical power is restored to Unit 2.

Kaiju Brooklyn Bigger & Better

I had a Super Sunday at Kaiju Brooklyn with my road buddy Eric and his daughter Aria. John from Robo7 and his team just keep building a bigger and more expansive event. We missed Saturday but made it Sunday and we saw friends, familiar faces, great vendors and cosplay. There were more vendors in a much bigger room. The tables overflowing with Godzilla and Ultraman merch. I met the wonderful Linda Miller who played Lt. Susan Watson in King Kong Escapes (1967). I saw friend Louie Anna working with Marusan where I snagged a cool Ultraman sofubi. I always find good stuff from The Vampire Robots. From a new vendor I got these awesome Godzilla and MechaGodzilla Jointed Die Cut Decoration from Vintage Spooky to hang on my wall. Just the way I like it. I walked away with cool stuff but forgot to get Nick’s new Anguirus print. And we enjoy the great shops and food at Industry City, Brooklyn. 6.2
