日本の映画界に、特殊撮影という永遠の技術を残した”神様”円谷英二監督。今回その偉業をたたえる本が出現版されたのを記念して、特撮の歴史をふりかえってみよう。(小学館発行『円谷英二』より)

どちらが本物？
Which one is real?

左右2つの写真見比べべてみよう。右が本物。左は最初の特撮カラー映画『ラドン』で使われた福岡市内も20分の1の成功なミニチュアなんだ。

Let’s compare the left and right two photos. The one on the right is the real one. On the left is a successful 1/20 scale miniature of Fukuoka City, which was used in the first special effects color movie Rodan.

このセットを作るのに80日の日数を800万円の費用がかかった。

It took 80 days and 8 million yen to make this set.

Behind the scenes

出番を待つラドン。「あー、早くあの家を袁したいなー」だって。

Rodan waiting for his turn. “Ah, I want to move out of that house as soon as possible.”

暴れん坊のゴジラも円谷監督の前ではおとなしい。演技指導をペコペコしてうける。

The rampaging Godzilla is also quiet in front of Director Tsuburaya. He receives acting guidance with a lot of effort.

トリックの魔術！
Magic tricks!

写真中英の線より上を隠してください。「あっ、ゴジラに家を壊される‼︎」というシーン。でも、上のほうでは、裸の人が「ヨッコラショ」。怪獣ファンにはあまりみせたくない舞台裏だ。

Hide above the lines in the middle of the photo. The scene “Ah, Godzilla destroys the house!” But at the top, the naked person doing “heave-ho.” It’s behind the scenes that I don’t want monster fans to see.

ぬいぐるみは重たく、中は暑い。5分も動くと汗だくだ。そこで、一休みの時はゴジラもこんなユーモスラなかっこうになってしまう。

Costumes are heavy and hot inside. If you move for five minutes, you will be sweating. Therefore, when taking a break, Godzilla also becomes humorous like this.

ウルトラマンと話す円谷監督。同氏が直接に作ったのは第2作『ウルトラセブン』までだ。

ゴジラにほえ方を教える円谷監督。顔つきまで変えて、真にせまる名演妓。
