Meeting with a storyboard

ぜ特撮を、なぜ怪獣映画を作るのか。それは、作っているスタッフ員が大の怪獣好きだからなのだ。絵コンテによる打ち合わせにも会社のえらい人たちがすすんで参加する。

Why make special effects, why make a monster movie? That’s because the staff members who make them really like monsters. Great people from the company willingly participate in meetings about storyboards.

絵コンテによる打ち合わせは合理的だ。それは、撮影開始以前に映画のイメージを、だれにでも理解できるようにし、むだがわぶけれからだ。

Meetings with storyboards are rational. It’s because it makes the image of the movie understandable to anyone before the filming starts, and it’s a waste of time.

田中友幸(ひだり)と森岩雄。日本の特撮を世界的水準にまで、高めた大製作者だ。

Tomoyuki Tanaka (Hidari) and Iwao Mori. He is a great producer who raised Japanese special effects to the world level.

「宇宙大戦争」より、コンテを説明する円谷英二特技監督。この絵コンテに一枚枚に極秘の印が押され、会社の機密書類と同様のあつがいをうけていた。それだけ重要だったのだ。

絵コンテは、映画が企画され、脚本の準備稿ができてから作られ、ストーリーととも検討された。

The storyboards were created after the film had been planned and the script had been drafted, and were considered along with the story.

Iwao Mori, who is a shooting staff member, takes a serious look at Rodan and Meganulon designs.

藤本真澄も円谷英二も、だれもかもじつに楽しそう。怪獣好きなまえに、映画作りが大好きなのだ。

Sanezumi Fujimoto, Eiji Tsuburaya, and everyone seem to have fun. Before they liked monsters, they love making movies.
