Talk Theme #01

What made me fall in love with Godzilla?

I was attracted by the beauty of the design and the coolness of the poster.

Here is the poster that Okuda-san was fascinated by!

Movie poster for Godzilla vs. Biollante (1989). Facing Godzilla is the flower-beast form of Biollante, a mysterious creature born from a plant and Godzilla cells.

Okuda Shuji (hereafter, O): I first fell in love with Godzilla when I was in elementary school. I saw a poster for Godzilla: Biollante and was blown away, thinking, “Wow! What is this? It’s so cool!” That was also the first time I ever bought a poster. From then on, I became hooked and would always watch any new films that came out.

Hashimoto Nao (hereinafter H): (Looking at the poster) A rose with lips? What an impactful visual. Weren’t you scared when you saw it as a child? O: No, I thought the bright red visual was cool. Biollante is a monster created through genetic manipulation, and in the poster it is surrounded by plant vines, with its fanged mouth wide open. Its weakness is that it can barely move. Hashimoto-san, have you seen Godzilla?

H: I also watched it as a kid and was excited by the battles between monsters, but I don’t think I really understood the story.

O: At first, I was drawn to the beauty of Godzilla’s form, but as I got older and began to understand the story, I began to realize its depth and continuous storyline.

H: I used to think it was a story of good triumphing over evil, with the hero defeating the bad guy, but I guess that’s not the case.

O: That’s what’s interesting about Godzilla. The setting and interpretation of Godzilla change depending on the era, director, and screenwriter, so I recommend comparing each film and series.

H: I’ll look at it from that perspective.

These are two memorable works from the Heisei VS series.

Top: “Godzilla vs. MechagGodzilla” (1993). Depicts the battle between Godzilla and MechagGodzilla, an anti-Godzilla weapon developed by humans. Bottom: “Godzilla vs. Destroyah” (1995). The final film in the Heisei VS series.

Talk Theme #02

The Heisei VS series that I watched as a child.

All the Godzilla posters are awesome!

Monsters and special effects are a man’s dream.

It’s packed with action and a deep story.

O: “Godzilla vs Biollante” is part of the Heisei VS series, but what’s fascinating about it is how the Godzilla cells and characters are connected between the films.

H: Oku-chan, which of the Heisei VS series is your favorite?

O: I guess it would be “Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla.” The Showa-era MechaGodzilla is cool, but I personally prefer the Heisei version because it’s sleeker. MechaGodzilla actually has some high-spec features, and it has a special move called “Plasma Grenade.” It absorbs Godzilla’s heat ray and high-energy attacks from outside with its armor, stores them up, and fires them back as a powerful beam from the cannon on its abdomen.

H: Wow! I also remember MechaGodzilla being visually cool. Boys especially like things with a metallic feel, don’t they?

O: I also like the music that appears when Mechagodzilla appears. This film isn’t a battle between monsters like Mothra or King Ghidorah, but rather a human counterattack using human wisdom, which really gets to me. It’s a counterattack by the monsters themselves. The music really gets to me, and it conveys the temptation to counterattack.

H: At the time, I was amazed that scientists had gone to the trouble of making it look like Godzilla (laughs).

O: I also like “Godzilla vs Destroyah.” Destroyah was born from the abnormal evolution of a microorganism affected by the Oxygen Destroyer, the weapon that defeated the original Godzilla. I didn’t understand it as a child, but when I watched it as an adult, I was shocked and thought, “So that’s how it all connects!”

H: That’s quite an ironic turn of events.

Talk Theme #03

Godzilla is a mirror that reflects the historical background and social situation.

I’ve watched “Shin Godzilla” many times.

The scene where Godzilla lands in Kamakura. There are many different perspectives that make you wonder, “What would Godzilla really look like when he appears in the city?”

I became interested in politics because of watching Godzilla.

H: When I was a child, I watched Godzilla because I loved the coolness of the monsters and special effects, but listening to your story, it seems like Godzilla is a film that really makes you realize a lot of things. It really gets you thinking.

O: I feel like I’ve learned a lot of words from Godzilla, like “United Nations” and “Self-Defense Forces.” Watching Godzilla is educational because it helps you understand the historical background and social situation of the time. You’ll be amazed at how Godzilla’s capacity is to take on any disaster or problem.

H: By making it a “Godzilla” film, it doesn’t come across as preachy, and you can learn naturally while enjoying the film… It’s truly something that both children and adults can enjoy!

O: I have “Shin Godzilla” on DVD and I love it so much that I’ve watched it many times. As the tagline says, “Reality (Japan) vs. Fiction (Godzilla),” Godzilla is fiction, but the way the government portrays him is very realistic and interesting.

H: Now I want to watch all the different Godzilla movies again!

O: There is continuity in the story, but each film is complete, so even if you’re not very familiar with Godzilla, I think you can start watching from the one you want to see. Also, regardless of whether it has a happy ending or not, even if there are moments of despair, everything works out in the end, so please watch it with peace of mind!

H: I think I’ll start with Biollante.

O: I’ve only seen the serious Godzilla movies, so I’ll try watching the comical “Invasion of Astro Monster”!

It’s nice to watch Godzilla as an adult!

Godzilla is a great way for children and adults to learn about society!
