今、この本を手にしている小・中学生の君達が、まだ生まれていなかった昭和29年に「ゴジラ」が誕生しました。水爆実験によってめざめたゴジラが東京に上陸し、平和に暮らしていた人々が逃げまどい死んでいくシーンに、まだ若かった君達のお父さんやお母さんは、ゴジラを恐怖の象徴として見てきました。

“Godzilla” was born in 1954, when the elementary and junior high school students who are holding this book in their hands were not yet born. Your young fathers and mothers saw Godzilla, awakened by a hydrogen bomb test, landing in Tokyo and people living peacefully dying in a panic, and saw Godzilla as a symbol of fear.

「ゴジラ」は多くの人々を驚かせ、大反響を呼びました。それは日本だけではなく、アメリカやヨーロッパでも同じで、一躍世界の注目をあびることになったのです。

そこで一作目で死んだはずのゴジラが復活し、以来30年の今日までの間、ゴジラとともにラドン、モスラ、ガメラ、キングギドラなどなど、多くの怪獣が生まれてきました。怖かった怪獣達もいつしか、見て楽しい、子供達のアイドルに変ってい着ました。
