Hideto Ogata’s anguish

人間ドラマとしても傑作といわれるゴジラ」だが、ここではいままで語られる機会の少なかった主人 公・尾形の心の動きを追ってみたい。

“Godzilla is said to be a masterpiece as a human drama”, but here I would like to follow the movement of the heart of the main character, Ogata, who has rarely been talked about until now.

映画の中盤、恋人の恵美子が、芹沢邸を訪れるが、帰宅後の彼女は、 芹沢邸でのことを一切語ろうとしな い。このとき尾形は、いかな気持ちだったろうか。 芹沢が恵美子に恋心を持っていることは、彼も知っていたはずである。オキシジェンデストロイヤーのことなど知るよしもない尾形が、恵美子と芹沢の間に何かあったのではないかと疑ったとしてもなんら不思議はないはずだ。

In the middle of the movie, her lover Emiko visits Serizawa’s house, but after returning home, she never talks about her at Serizawa’s house. How did Ogata feel at this time? He must have known that Serizawa is in love with Emiko. It should be no wonder that Ogata, who didn’t know about Oxygen Destroyer, suspected that something had happened between Emiko and Serizawa.

この後、尾形は、恵美子との結婚を急ごうとするが、それは彼の心の焦りを表すものだったのではないか。

After this, Ogata tries to hurry to marry Emiko, which may be a sign of his impatience.

だが、恵美子の父親、山根博士に打ち明ける機会を失い、悶々とする尾形。彼にとっては、ゴジラのことなどどうでもよかったに違いない。 頭の中にあるのは恵美子のことだけだ。

However, Ogata loses the opportunity to confide in Emiko’s father, Dr. Yamane, and is in agony. For him, Godzilla must have been irrelevant. All that is in his head is Emiko.

彼が葛藤から解放されるのは、ゴジラ が去った後、恵美子オキシジェンデストロイヤーのことを打ち明けられたときである。このときの尾形のなんと嬉しそうなこと。それは、ゴジラ対策がみつかったからというより、恵美子への疑いが晴れたことを喜ぶ表情た。

He is released from conflict when he confesses to Emiko the Oxygen Destroyer after Godzilla has left. What a happy thing about Ogata at this time. It wasn’t because Godzilla countermeasures were found, but rather because he was pleased that his doubts about Emiko had cleared up.

そう考えていくと、映画のラストで、尾形は芹沢を見殺しにしたのではないかとも思えてくる。 なぜ、もっと早く芹沢の命綱を引きあげようとしなかったのか。疑いが晴れたと はいえ、尾形の胸の中には、芹沢に対する警戒心がくすぶっていたことだろう。オキシジェンデストロイヤの使用を頼みにいった際、怪我を負わされた恨みも残っていたかもしれない。芹沢が自らの命を断つこともしかすると尾形は心のどこかで望んでいたのではないだろうか。

With that in mind, at the end of the movie, Ogata might have killed Serizawa. Why didn’t he try to pull up Serizawa’s lifeline earlier? He said the suspicions had cleared, but Ogata’s chest would have been smoldering with caution against Serizawa. He may have had an injured grudge when he asked for the use of Oxygen Destroyer. Serizawa may have killed himself, perhaps Ogata wanted somewhere in his heart.
