『ゴジラ対メガロ』での不満を解消するかのように、この〝ゴジラ誕生20周年映画〟と銘うたれた『ゴジラ対メカゴジラ』(脚本 山浦弘靖、福田純/監督・福田純)において、ゴジラは最大の敵を迎えることになる。その名は、メカメカメカゴジラ、メッカァゴッジラァがぁ、やってきぃたぁ~と、ベルベラ・リーンをやっている場合ではない。ただ国頭那美役の彼女が本編で歌う『ミヤラビの祈り』、B面の『メカゴジラがやってきた』があまりにスグレモノだったので……………。

そう、この全身が武器たる悪のゴジラ(!)ことメカゴジラの登場によって、ゴジラはこの時期の本来あるべき姿、地球を守るぼくらのヒーローとしてのアイデンティティーを取り戻し、映画の中心に返り咲くことになる。ヒーローは強敵を迎えてこそ、その魅力を存分に発揮できるといわれるが、この作品はまさしくその好例といえるだろう。

このメカゴジラ、にせ○○の常套手段である、本物に化けての悪業も見せてくれるわけで、二体のゴジラが対峙するという、かつてないシーンも登場する(ゴジラとミニラのツ・ショットも、そう?)。特技監督・中野昭慶の演出も冴えわたり、コンビナートでの対決はもう、火薬の量を間違えたのでは、と思わずにいられない迫力! オプチカル合成で描かれる数々の光線、手足の指先から発射すミサイル、前後の敵を同時に攻撃できるなどのアイデアも抜群で、加えて佐藤勝の異様にテンポのよいBGMも効果絶大!

This MechaGodzilla, which is a common practice of fake ○○[unidentified], also shows the evil work that is disguised as a real thing, and there will be an unprecedented scene where two Godzillas face each other (Godzilla and Minya’s two shots also appear. yes?). The director, Teruyoshi Nakano’s production is also clear, and the confrontation at the complex is so powerful that you can’t help but think that you made a mistake in the amount of gunpowder! The idea of being able to attack with missiles when enemies are in front and behind at the same time is outstanding, and in addition, the unusually fast-paced background music of Masaru Sato is also extremely effective!

ドラマ部分も、窮地を救うインターポールという展開の連続で、軽快なことこのうえない。ただ、翌年開催の沖縄海洋博とのタイアップのためか、沖縄に眠る新怪獣キングシーサーの謎をめぐるストーリー展開が、残念といえば残念。

ここはやはり、「モスラ対ゴジラ』的に、都市を蹂躙するメカゴジラ、対策に奔走する人間側、といったドラマ展開を望みたかったと思うのは、私ひとりではないだろう。
