ゴジラ対マニア
Godzilla vs Mania

ゴジラドロボーよ、マニアなら一生ゴジラと暮らせ。

Godzilla robber, if you’re a maniac, live with Godzilla for the rest of your life.

ラズウェル細木
Roswell Hosoki [Japanese manga artist]

ゴジラのぬいぐるみが盗まれたことがあった。盗まれたものがゴジラとあって、各マスコミ、特にワイドショーが大喜びしてネタにしていたが、そんなときの司会者のマトメの言葉は、たいていこんな具合だ。

A Godzilla costume was stolen. The stolen thing was Godzilla, and the media, especially the wide show, was overjoyed and made it a story, but the words of the moderator, Matome, were usually like this.

「これはマニアの犯行であるとの見方が強まっていますが、ホントーにゴジラが好きだったら、全国のゴジラ・ファンのために、ぜひ返してほしいですね」

“There is a growing view that this is a maniac crime, but if you really like Godzilla, I would like you to return it for the sake of Godzilla fans all over the country.”

この手の事件が起きると必ず聞かれるコメントであるが、まことに見当はずれな意見である。そこで、マニアという言葉を辞書で引いてみる。

It is a comment that is always heard when an incident of this kind occurs, but it is a completely irrelevant opinion. So, I looked up the word maniac in the dictionary.

・一つの事に熱中している人。「鉄道ー」「切手ー」(大辞林)

① Enthusiasm. enthusiastic. obsessed. (2) A person who is extremely enthusiastic about one thing. “Stamps” (Kojien)

・① 熱狂。心酔②熱狂する人。愛好者の意味で使うのは和製用法。(知恵蔵)

① Enthusiasm. Infatuation ② Enthusiastic person. The Japanese usage is used in the sense of lovers. (Chiezo)

さらに英和辞典も引いてみる。

Also, try looking up an English-Japanese dictionary.

・1精神病。躁病(極度の興奮とときに幻覚狂暴な挙動を伴なう一種の錯乱症)。2熱狂熱中狂熱。(新英和辞典)

1 Psychosis. Mania (a type of delirious disorder with extreme agitation and sometimes hallucinogenic violent behavior). 2 Frenzy in frenzy. (New English-Japanese Dictionary)

・躁病熱中。熱狂。熱狂。(新コンサイス英和辞典)

Manic fever. Enthusiasm. Enthusiasm. (New Concise English-Japanese Dictionary)

つまり、マニアという言葉の根本は「熱」と「病」なのだ。

In other words, the root of the word mania is “fever” and “disease”.

He likes Godzilla so much that he even steals costumes to make them his own. This is a strange act from the point of view of a normal person who has no interest in Godzilla costumes. However, there are strange people who actually have a hobby and commit crimes. Anime mania stealing cels from anime studios, record mania stealing records from jazz cafes, tiger mania throwing Uncle Kernel into the river (Tiger means Hanshin Tigers), and so on. The anti-social behavior of “maniacs” and “enthusiasms” is too numerous to enumerate.

とあるものが好きになるということは、人間やがて「熱」そして「病」へと導くはなはだアブナイ行為であるのではないだろうか。そして、「マニア」や「熱狂者」といった言葉は、そのアブナさを言葉の源のところでしっかり言い切っているのである。

Falling in love with a certain thing is a very dangerous act that eventually leads to “fever” and then “illness.” And words like “maniac” and “enthusiast” express their naivety right at the source of the word.

その意味からすると、「オタク」という言葉は「熱」とも「病」とも無縁であり、「オタク」は「マニア」や「熱狂者」よりもアブナクないといえる。

In that sense, the word ‘otaku’ has nothing to do with ‘fever’ or ‘disease,’ and it can be said that ‘otaku’ is less dangerous than ‘maniac’ or ‘fanatic’.

さて、ゴジラを盗んだのがホントーのマニアであったなら、犯人は全国のゴジラ・ファンのことなど考えて返したりするハズがない。なにせマニアなのだ。したがって先のワイドショーの司会者のようなコメントは極めて無意味ということになる。

Now, if the man who stole Godzilla was a real maniac, the culprit would never think of Godzilla fans all over the country and give it back. I’m a maniac. Therefore, comments like those of the host of the aforementioned wide show are extremely meaningless.

ところでめいぐるみはこのあとしばらくしてから路傍にうち捨てられているところを発見され、元のところへ返っていった。私は思う。犯人はホントーのマニアではない。ホントーのマニアならせっかく手に入れたものを、マスコミでとりあげられて社会問題になったぐらいで、手放すはずはない。たとえ四畳半で暮らしていようと、ゴジラを部屋に飾り幸福にひたって所有し続けるはずだ。

By the way, after a while, the costume was found abandoned on the side of the road and returned to where it was originally. The culprit is not a true maniac. If you’re a real maniac, there’s no way you’ll let go of what you’ve taken the trouble to obtain, just because it’s been picked up by the mass media and become a social problem. Even if you live in a four-and-a-half tatami mat room, you will still be able to display Godzilla in your room and happily immerse yourself in it.

どうせとったのなら一生持ち続けてほしかった。あの犯人はゴジラを中途半端に捨てることによって、全国のさまざまなジャンルのマニアに恥をかかせたのである。

I wish I had kept it for the rest of my life. By half-heartedly abandoning Godzilla, the culprit has embarrassed maniacs of various genres across the country.
