Godzilla Steelman Interview

私は第一作「ゴジラ」からずっとゴジラの勇姿を撮影してきました。最初の頃は、想像もつかない大怪獣が都会で大暴れする映画のスチールなんてそれまでなかったから本当に困りましたね。とにかく、恐いもの”でなきゃいけないってことを前提に起きました。スチールは、一枚でその映画を語らなけりゃいけないわけで、特撮映画なんかは特に色々な写真 をコラージュしたりしてとても面白かったですね。

I have been shooting Godzilla’s gallant figure since the first work “Godzilla.” At the beginning, I was really troubled because I had never seen a movie still where an unimaginable giant monster rampages in the city. Anyway, it happened on the premise that it had to be “scary.” Stills had to tell the story of the movie in one piece, so special effects movies were especially fun to collage various photos.

スチール写真だって映画と同じように人物を合成したり、(10枚の写真を一度に合成したりは普通)光線を描きこんだりする 特撮もの。だから粘土原型のゴジラだってあんなに凄い迫力の場面が出来あがるわけだ。(ゴジラ対ガメラ、 ウルトラマンだって可能だ!) スチール写真化され特撮映画は、スチールマンのイマジネーションに よる、もう一つの特撮映像であることを忘れちゃいけない! 被写体その物をファインダーに収める本来の写真から、途方もないワンダーランドを作りあげる特撮写真まで、映画のスチールの巾は広く、限りない世界を持っている。君達もスチール写真で特撮登したり、オリジナルストーリーを作ったりして自分のイメージを写真に焼き込んでみてはどうかな。面白い写真が出来たら編集部まで送ってね!

Even in still photographs, people are synthesized in the same way as movies, and (usually, 10 photos are synthesized at once), and light rays are drawn. That’s why even a clay model of Godzilla can create such a powerful scene. (Godzilla vs. Gamera, even Ultraman is possible!) We must not forget that a special effects movie that is turned into still photographs is another special effects image created by a Stillman’s imagination! The width of movie stills is wide and has an endless world. Why don’t you try to imprint your own image on a photo by creating a special effect with a still photo or creating an original story?
