そもそも、“ゴジラ、とは,いかなる生物なのか。前世紀の恐竜を思わせる姿に、計り知れない力と凶暴性をひめている。そして、何よりも驚くべきことは, 原水爆実験の放射能を全身にあびながら、なおかつ、そのエネルギーを自らの武器に変えてしまった生物である。

In the first place, “What kind of creature is Godzilla? It has immeasurable power and ferocity in the appearance reminiscent of the dinosaurs of the last century. And most surprisingly, the radioactivity of the atomic bomb experiment. It is a creature that has turned its energy into its own weapon while being exposed to the whole body.

ゴジラというネーミングは, 「ゴリラ(=比類なき 怪力を誇る動物)」と「クジラ (=地球最大の動物)」の合成であり, 最強・最大の怪物であることを強 烈に印象づけた。人類が作りだした最大の破壊兵器が現代に呼びさましたゴジラは、ただの恐竜ではなかった。それは, 史上最強・最大の生物が, 人類最大の力=科学の力を身につけた,〝力〟の象徴であり,破壊力の強大さにおいては神にも等しい存在なのだ。この人知を越えた存在こそ“怪獣〟であり, ゴジラは,その第1号として登場した。

The name Godzilla is a combination of “gorilla (= an animal boasting unparalleled superhuman strength)” and “whale (= the largest animal on earth),” and strongly impressed that it was the strongest and largest monster. Godzilla, the greatest destructive weapon created by mankind, was called in modern times, was not just a dinosaur. It is a symbol of “power” that the strongest and greatest creatures in history have acquired the greatest power of mankind = the power of science, and is equal to God in the strength of destructive power. This existence beyond human knowledge is the “monster,” and Godzilla appeared as the first of them.

もともとゴジラは, 大戸島に残る伝説に語られている, 大昔に海から島に上陸して人間を食う魔 物の名である。島には, いけにえまでそなえた厄払いの神楽が伝わっており, 昔は, ゴジラは神としてあがめられていたらしい。これらのことから,水爆実験のはるか以前より, 太古の生物の生き残りとしてのゴジラは,大戸島近海に出没していたと推察される。それが, 科学の生んだ〝悪魔の火〟によって眠りから呼び起こされ, 無敵の怪物と化して出現するとは、だれが想像しえただろうか….。

Originally, Godzilla is the name of a demon that landed on the island from the sea and eats humans long ago, which is told in the legend that remains on Odo Island. On the island, a sacrificial kagura is transmitted, and it seems that Godzilla was revered as a god in the old days. From these facts, it is inferred that Godzilla as a survivor of ancient creatures had infested the sea near Odo Island long before the hydrogen bomb experiment. Who could have imagined that it would be awakened from sleep by the “fire of the devil” born of science and emerged as an invincible monster….

どうくつかくして、ゴジラに科学のメスが入れられる時がきた。古生物学者, 山根恭平博士が大戸島での現地調査およびゴジラの目撃・観察をまとめた報 告によると、ゴジラは, ジュラ紀から白亜紀にかけて生息していた, 水生は虫類から陸上獣類に進 化する中間型の生物で, 海底洞窟にひそんでいたものが、核実験によって安住の地を奪われたために我々の目のまえに出現したという。その裏付けとして博士は、同時代の三葉虫や赤粘土がゴジラに付着していたこと, さらにそれらからストロンチウム90の反応がえられたことをあげている。山根 博士の証明は広く承認され, 定説となり、怪物の名称も大戸島伝説にしたがって〝ゴジラ〟と呼ばれるようになった。

ゴジラの出現は人類に, いまだかつてない恐怖をあたえた。昭和29年8月の夜に, ゴジラは日本に上陸した。戦後9年たち, ようやく国民の生活も向上し始めたときに、この破壊の権化の登場は, 国の存亡にすらかかわる。また, 自衛隊が発足し、日本の再軍備化が進むなかで, ゴジラの存在はそ れ自体で, 戦争の恐怖を増幅させるものであった。

The appearance of Godzilla has given humanity an unprecedented horror. On the night of August 1954, Godzilla landed in Japan. Nine years after the war, when the lives of the people finally began to improve, the emergence of this destructive incarnation could even affect the survival of the country. In addition, with the establishment of the Self-Defense Forces and the progress of Japan’s re-arming, the existence of Godzilla itself amplifies the fear of war.

戦車も大砲も、ゴジラの超パワーのまえにはおもちゃに等しく, 5万ボルトの電流もききめはな かった。水爆の閃光を思いだすのか, 光を見るとゴジラは凶暴さを増すのだった。

Both tanks and cannons were equal to toys before Godzilla’s super-power, and the current of 50,000 volts was uncertain. Do you remember the flash of the hydrogen bomb? When you see the light, Godzilla becomes more ferocious.

人類は、かろうじてゴジラに勝った。だが、山根博士の予言どおり、再びゴジラはやってきた。 しかし、それは人類への挑戦ではなく、より強大な敵への挑戦だった。 やがて人類は傍観者にまわり, 難をのがれていくが、そのときから〝ゴジラの戦争〟の幕は切って落とされたのだ。

Mankind barely beat Godzilla. However, as Dr. Yamane predicted, Godzilla came again. But it wasn’t a challenge to humanity, but a challenge to a more powerful enemy. Eventually, humankind turned to bystanders and escaped the difficulties, but from that time on, the curtain of “Godzilla’s war” was cut off.

「ゴジラ」の原作者、故・香山滋が昭和三十年に「少年クラブ」で連載した「獣人ゴリオン」。ゴリオンという名は、ゴリラとライオンの合成という、ゴジラ調のネーミング。 この作品は、「獣人雪男」(おなじく香山滋原作)についで、東宝が特撮映画化する予定だった。

“Therianthropy [Human Beast] Gorion” serialized in “Shonen Club” by the late Shigeru Kayama, the original author of “Godzilla.” The name Gorion is a Godzilla-like name that is a composition of a gorilla and a lion. This work was planned to be made into a special effects movie by Toho, following “Half Human” (same as Shigeru Kayama’s original work).
