“Godzilla” radio drama and novel

第1作『ゴジラ』が封切られたのは1954年11月3日。しかし、人々がゴジラという怪獣を知ったのは、この日が初めてではない。同年の7月17日から9月2日まで、ニッポン放送で『怪獣ゴジラ』のラジオドラマが11回に渡り放送されていたのである。

The first Godzilla was released on November 3, 1954. However, this is not the first time that people have learned about the monster Godzilla. From July 17th to September 2nd of the same year, the radio drama “Monster Godzilla” was broadcast 11 times on Nippon Broadcasting System.

台本を書いたのは、当時、東宝の文芸部長だった龍野敏で、ストーリーは映画とほぼ同じ。この台本を探偵作家の永瀬三吾がアレンジし、原作者の香山滋が最終的にまとめたものが、同年10月、『怪獣ゴジラ』として書店から発行されている。

The script was written by Satoshi Tatsuno, who was the literary director of Toho at the time, and the story is almost the same as the movie. This script was arranged by detective writer Sango Nagase and finally compiled by the original author, Shigeru Kayama, and was published by a bookstore as “Monster Godzilla” in October of the same year.

また、翌55年7月には、香山が『ゴジラ』と『ゴジラの逆襲』を少年向きにノヴェライズした『ゴジラ東京篇/大阪篇』が島村出版から刊行。こちらは大戸島の新吉少年が主人公を務め、ゴジラを崇める「東京ゴジラ団」なる怪組織が登場するなどのアレンジが施されている。

In July 1955, Shimamura Publishing published “Godzilla Tokyo/Osaka,” a novelization of “Godzilla” and “Godzilla Raids Again” by Kayama for boys. Arrangements such as the appearance of a mysterious organization called “Tokyo Godzilla Team” that worships Godzilla, and the main character of Shinkichi boy of Odo Island are given here.
