1999年に東宝映画主導で再生されたゴジラは、「ゴジラ映画」史上2番目といえる6作品の毎年制作が実現した。再生したゴジラは設定、デザインの変更が行われているが、制作上の理由からかつての姿をベースとしたゴジラも2回登場している。ここで、それらを検証してみよう。

ミレニアムゴジラ
Millennium Godzilla

身長が55mと生物感が重視された設定で、デザインは西川伸司。やや前傾したフォルムで背びれが炎をイメージしたといわれるパープルが配された大きなものになり、オープン撮影の場面のメイン写真で分かりやすいが体色は黒から緑色に変更された。歯は大きさの違うものが1列で配列されている。スーツの造形は若狭新一のモンスターズで、演じる喜多務の体型に合わせた全身の壁から抜かれて製作された。アップ用と(撮影時に足を切断)、爆発シーンのための着用が作られたという。

It has a slightly forward-leaning form and a large dorsal fin with a purple color that is said to represent a flame, and although it is easy to see in the main photo of the open shooting scene, the body color has been changed from black to green. Teeth of different sizes are arranged in a row. His suit is modeled after Wakasa Shinichi’s MONSTERS, and was made by pulling out the whole body wall to match the body shape of Kita Tsutomu, who plays him. It is said that it was made for close-ups (the leg was cut off at the time of shooting) and for the explosion scene.

「ゴジラ×メガギラス」のゴジラ、「ギラゴジ」は設定的には別の存在だが、形状はミレニアムゴジラ」である。前作で製作された全身からアップ用が1体造形されているのでフォルムに変更はなくアップをしたものも徒用されているようだ。体色はやや明るい緑になり、背びれのバーブルがやや強くなっている。海上を泳ぐシーンのゴジラは「カチコチ君」と呼ばれた硬い造形物だった。

Godzilla of “Godzilla x Megaguirus,” “Giragoji” is a different existence in terms of setting, but the shape is “Millennium Godzilla.” Since one body for close-up is modeled from the whole body produced in the previous work, there is no change in form, and it seems that the close-up one is also used. The body color is a little brighter green, and the barb on the dorsal fin is a little stronger. Godzilla in the scene swimming in the sea was a hard sculpture called “Kachikochi-kun.”

金子修介監督の要望でスタイルは昭和のゴジラで、形も金子の指名で品田冬樹のVi-SHOP(当時)が行っている追求されたことは適国聖獣との体格で、息子ゴジラのように極力大きいスーツが製作されている。結果その身長は2.2mとなり、演技者も大柄なアクション俳優、吉田になった。白目も特徴で、悪の権化として描くため、観客に感情移入をさせないための処置だったという。

このゴジラは設定では60mで設定が30mのバラゴンの大きさである。そのバラゴンと対決した大ゴジラを演出するのにはもってこいで、はるかに小さい怪獣を攻める様はまさに悪役であった。
