Godzilla is coming in 2019. The much anticipated Godzilla King of the Monsters directed and co-written by Michael Dougherty will hit the big screen on May 31 as the next chapter in Legendary’s MonsterVerse. The cast boasts Stranger Things Millie Bobby Brown (Madison Russell), The Shape of Water Sally Hawkins (Dr. Vivienne Graham), Vera Farmiga (Dr. Emma Russell), Thomas Middleditch (Sam Coleman), and Ken Watanabe returning as Dr. Ishiro Serizawa.
“The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.” — Legendary and Warner Bros The movie appears to roughly follow the Showa-era classic Ghidorah the Three Headed Monsters (1965) in which the three titans Godzilla, Rodan, and Mothra teamed up to take down the new space kaiju King Ghidorah and save the earth.
The trailers give us a glimpse of these gigantic monsters. The scenes are visually stunning like fine art paints come to life. The choice of Clair de lune (by Claude Debussy) for the first trailer amped up the drama while introducing this classic to a new generation of listeners.
The characters set the tone and give us the movie’s direction with memorable quotes.
“Senators, we believe that these titans are just the tip of the iceberg. Which of these titans are here to protect us, and which of these titans are here to threaten us?” — Sam Coleman
“Our world is changing. The mass extinction we feared has already begun, and we are the cause. We are the infection. But like all living organisms, the earth unleashed a fever to fight this infection. It’s original and rightful rulers, the Titans. For thousands of years these creatures have remained in hiding around the world. And unless all the Titans are found, our planet will perish, and so will we. They are the only guarantee that life will carry on.” — Dr. Emma Russell
“So you want to make Godzilla our pet.” — A US Government Official
“No, we will be his.” — Dr Watanabe Serizawa
“You sure he’s going to be okay.” — Madison Russell
“They’re everywhere, battling for dominance. A rival alpha to Godzilla.” — Dr. Vivienne Graham
“Long Live the King.” — Unknown man
The release of the second official trailer offered a closer look at Madison and titans. Madison Russell desperate radio call from a remote island location is reminiscent of Ichiro Miki’s imaginative play with a toy computer in All Monsters Attack (1969) (aka Godzilla’s Revenge). Mothra is beautiful and majestic. Rodan is terrifying. King Ghidorah is powerful. But Godzilla is the King!
Several months ago, Michael Dougherty appeared at the Godzilla King of the Monsters panel at Tokyo Comic Con to discuss the film, to reveal concept art, and to present different version of the second trailer.
