Famous Magazines

6.19.14

I have many memories growing up G. I keep select items in my curio and one prominent item is my Godzilla vs. Bionic Monster edition of Famous Monsters of Filmland. I spent hours looking through my collection of magazines. Every trip to our local 7-11 convenient store I would hurry over to the magazine racket to find the latest edition. Any story, page, or ad about Godzilla made it a worthy buy. Famous Monsters was our only source for all things monsters, horror, and sci-fi. It was full of over-the-top articles about the latest sci-fi movie reviews, and chronicles of famous monster legends.

Some issues were better than others. The Alien cover issue had a nice spread on Godzilla vs. Hedorah. I always wanted the All of Japan’s Monsters edition. I included Fangoria number one because of it prominent featured Godzilla on the cover, the concept poster of Godzilla vs. Megalon, and an overview of the Showa era Godzilla movies. For a long time I would just stare at its picture of Godzilla looming over a fallen Megalon because I had never seen that movie. I just loved that G suit. I loved the sketch I draw of it. I wish I still had it. In the 70s and 80s there were few resources, but Famous Monsters filled the void.

Covers of the editions I collected, many of which I still have store away in boxes.
