「読売新聞」のスクープ記事を、別の思いで食い入るように読む男がいた。東宝映画「ゴジラ」のプロデューサーとなる田中友幸(四三)である。この頃、田中はインドネシアとの合作映画の企画が頓挫し、急遽、新たな企画を練る 必要に迫られていた。田中の頭 に浮かんだ企画はこうだった。

東宝社長の小林一三(八一) は、企画を聞き、「一億円かか るんですか、普通の三本分です ね。よろしい、君の好きなよう にやってください。 『七人の侍』 『宮本武蔵』『ゴジラ』の三本は東宝再建がなったと世間に宣言するものになるでしょう」と言 ったという。東宝は「来なかったのは軍艦だけ」と言われた大争議(昭和二三年)の後遺症が癒えていなかったのである。監督に本多猪四郎 (四二)、特撮には第一人者、円谷英二(五二)を起用し、「G作品」とくいう秘匿名を持つSFX(特殊撮影効果)映画作りは、こうして開始された。

さっそく、恐竜のイメージやネーミン グ、特撮用のセットが準備されていった。 まず恐竜はイグアノドンをベースに、ティラノサウルス、ステゴサウルスの特徴を加味した体長二のぬいぐるみが作られた。名前も、ゴリラとクジラを合わせて「ゴジラ」と名づけられた。また、これと並行して、東京の市街の精巧なミニチュアが作られていった。ゴジラが襲撃する国会議事堂も、三三三分の一で寸分違わぬリアルな姿に作られた。 しかもこれらの作業はいずれも、厳重な情報管制のもとで進められていったのである。
