クールで知的な科学者が似合った怪優・平田昭彦

Akihiko Hirata, a mysterious actor who looks like a cool and intelligent scientist

平田昭彦という俳優は、 ゴジラファンには忘 れ得ない存在である。『ゴジラ』(5年)でのアイパッチをした科学者・芹沢大助博士 は水中酸素破壊剤「オキシジェ ン・デストロイヤー」を発明。破壊兵器として軍事利用されることを恐れた芹沢博士は、その 秘密を永遠に封印し、自ら東京溝に潜って使用し、そのままゴジラとともに自決するのだ。

Actor Akihiko Hirata is an unforgettable presence for Godzilla fans. Dr. Daisuke Serizawa, a scientist who wore an eye patch in “Godzilla” (5 years), invented the underwater oxygen destroyer, the “Oxygen Destroyer.” Dr. Serizawa fears that it will be used for military purposes as a weapon of destruction.

「大怪獣バラン」(58年)の火薬学者・藤村博士役ではダイナマイトの20倍の破壊力のある火薬バランにぶつけ、木っ端微塵に。「ウルトラマン」(66~67年) 岩本博士は開発した無重力爆弾(アラシ隊員が代わりに撃った)で、ウルトラマンを倒した宇宙恐竜ゼットンをも倒すのだ。このように人間の役でありながら3回も怪獣を倒したのだ。このように知的でクールな科学者役といったら彼のほかはなかった。「キングコング対ゴジラ」の重沢博士のように、ゴジラの 帰巣本能を言い当てるなど善側の代名詞のような存在だった。

Like Dr. Serizawa in “King Kong vs. Godzilla,” he was a representative for the good side, such as guessing Godzilla’s homing instinct.

東大卒という肩書に似合う知的で気品ある雰囲気で東宝の若 手スターのひとりとなり、岡本喜八・福田純・本多猪四郎・稲垣浩監督作品の常連となって、数多くのダンディな役柄をこなッチをした。

Becoming one of Toho’s young stars with an intelligent and elegant atmosphere that matches the title of a Tokyo University graduate, he became a regular in films directed by Kihachi Okamoto, Jun Fukuda, Ishiro Honda, and Hiroshi Inagaki, playing many dandy roles.

悪側では、「ゴジラ・エビラ ・モスラ 南海の大決闘』(66年)の秘密結社「赤イ竹」のアイパッチをした竜威隊長や、『レイ ンボーマン』(72~73年)の秘密結社「死ね死ね団」のリーダ ーでサングラスをした怪人物ミスターKなども忘れがたい。

On the evil side, Captain Ryuui who wore an eyepatch from the secret society “Red “Bamboo in “Godzilla, Ebirah, and Mothra: The Great Battle in the South Seas” (1966), and the secret society in “Rainbowman” (1972-73). We also cannot forget Mr. K, the mysterious person who wears sunglasses and is the leader of the “Dead Shine-dan.”

84年、惜しくもがん性リンパ管症で死去。同じ東宝出身の佐原健二とは平田が亡くなるまで親友同士だった。佐原の述懐によると、平田は最期まで「ぼくが「ウルトラQ」で君(佐原)が演じた万城目を演じたかったんだよな」と語っていたという。

In 1984, he sadly passed away from cancerous lymphangiosis. Kenji Sahara, who was also from Toho, was a close friend until Hirata died. According to Sahara’s recollection, Hirata said until the end, “I wanted to play Makime, who you (Sahara) played in ‘Ultra Q.”

芹沢博士(平田昭彦)は、水中酸素破壊剤「オキシジェン・デストロイヤー」を東京湾で使用し、ゴジラともに自決してしまう。

Dr. Serizawa (Akihiko Hirata) commits suicide together with Godzilla by using the underwater oxygen destroyer “Oxygen Destroyer” in Tokyo Bay.
