Godzilla and Okinawa

沖縄県 (以下、沖縄) は、 ゴジラ誕生20周年記念映画 『ゴジラ対メカゴジラ』 (1974) の主な舞台である。 当時、 沖縄は翌年に開催予定の “沖縄国際海洋博覧会”(通称” 海洋博”、” EXPO 75 ) で、 日本中の注目を集めていた 地域だった。 それゆえ、 九州~沖縄を結ぶ豪華フェ リー 那覇東急ホテルなど、 沖縄観光に関連する企業 との積極的なタイアップが行われた。 また、 有名観光 地でのロケも敢行されており、 守礼門、 識名園(しちな ぬうどぅん)、玉泉洞 (ぎょくせんどう)、 万座毛(まんざも う)などが次々に登場する。 なかでも印象に残るのは、 世界遺産 中城城跡 (なかぐすくじょうあと)、ヒロイン 国頭那美(くにがみなみ) が、 沖縄の守護神である怪獣・ キングシーサーを目覚めさせる唄 「ミヤラビの祈り」 を歌った万座海岸、 そして大宇宙ブラックホール第三 惑星人がメカゴジラの発進基地を築いていた洞窟・玉 泉洞だ。 『ゴジラ対メカゴジラ』のロケは、沖縄が米国 から返還されて1年目である 1973年秋に行われてお り、現在では見ることができない貴重な風景もフィル ムに収められている。

Okinawa Prefecture (hereinafter referred to as Okinawa) is the main stage of Godzilla’s 20th anniversary movie “Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla” (1974). At that time, Okinawa was a region that attracted the attention of all over Japan at the “Okinawa International Ocean Expo” (commonly known as “Okinawa Expo,” “EXPO 75”) scheduled to be held the following year. Therefore, it is a luxurious area connecting Kyushu and Okinawa. Active tie-ups were made with companies related to Okinawa tourism, such as the Ferry Naha Tokyu Hotel. In addition, locations at famous tourist destinations are also being carried out, and the guardian gate and Shichina Nudo Un, Gyokusendo, Manzamo, etc. will appear one after another. Among them, the most impressive ones are the remains of the world heritage Nakashiro Castle and the heroine Nami Kunigami sang the song “Miyarabi’s Prayer” that awakens the monster King Shisa, the guardian deity of Okinawa. It is the cave that was built, Tamaisen Cave. The location of “Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla” was done in the fall of 1973, the first year since Okinawa was returned from the United States, and the film contains precious scenery that cannot be seen now.

① 万座毛 国定公園。 沖縄県 国頭郡 (くにがみぐん)に位置する。万人が座することができる広い草原という意味が由来。毛は 草原のこと。

Manzamo National Monument. It is located in Kunigami-gun, Okinawa Prefecture. It comes from the meaning of a large grassland where everyone can sit. Hair is a meadow.

② 那覇東急ホテル 当時、観光用の高級リゾートホテルだった。2000 (平成12) 年閉館。

Naha Tokyu Hotel. At that time, it was a luxury resort hotel for sightseeing. Closed in 2000 (Heisei 12).

③ 守礼門 (しゅれいもん) 首里城の大手門。那覇市首里に位置。沖縄の民族衣装に琉装 (りゅうそう)に身をつつんだ娘たちは、撮影に協力した沖縄芸能社の仕込み。

Shureimon Gate. The main gate of Shuri Castle. Located in Shuri, Naha City. The girls dressed in Ryusou in Okinawan folk costumes were prepared by Okinawa Performing Arts Co., Ltd., who cooperated in the shooting.

④ 中城城跡14世紀に琉球王朝によって建造された城 (ぐすく)の一部｡ 城壁上に配置されているシーサー像は、本作の撮影に製作・設置された。

Nakagusuku Castle Ruins. Part of a castle built by the Ryukyu dynasty in the 14th century. The Shisa statue placed on the wall was created and installed for the shooting of this work.

⑤ 玉泉洞 玉城 (たまぐすく)にある鍾乳洞。1967年に発見された。

Gyokusendo Cave. A limestone cave in Tamagusuku. Discovered in 1967.
