昭和19年2月、日本軍の占領地 区だった太平洋マーシャル諸島のラゴス島において恐竜が目撃された。これは当時ラゴス島に駐留していたラゴス島守備隊のひとりで、福岡市に住む池畑益吉さんの証言によるもので、恐竜と日本兵が共 存していたと主張する池畑さんは、 恐竜を金儲けの道具にするな、と福岡シーサイド公園でオープンしまた「福岡恐竜ワールド」に抗議を 続けた。池畑さんによればラゴス島の両隣のクェゼリン、ルオットの両島が米軍の総攻撃によって玉 砕し、いよいよラゴス島に攻撃が はじまった時、恐竜が上陸した米兵に襲いかかったという。「わしら を守ったというより、自分の島を守ろうとしたのだろう。元来はお となしい奴だったのに一変して凶暴になった」･･･かくして恐竜のおかげで米軍は撤退。池畑さんたラゴス島守備隊はからくも生き伸び、その後日本軍の撤収をうけることができたのだ。問題の恐竜は米艦の艦砲射撃によって重傷を負い、 池畑さんたちにはどうすることもできなかったそうだ。それが一番の心残りだ、と池畑さんは いう。現在この恐竜はゴジラザウ ルスと命名され、平成4年に起こったゴジラVSキングギドラ事件の 中で、昭和29年のビキニ環礁での水爆実験によりゴジラに変化したことが推測されたが、もしもこの米軍の攻撃によって命を閉じていたならば、その後、40年にわたって砲撃をうけることもなかっただ ろう。 改めてゴジラの悲劇を痛感するエピソードだ。(映画「ゴジラ VSキングギドラ」より)

In February 1945, a dinosaur was witnessed on Lagos Island in the Pacific Marshall Islands, which was an occupied territory of the Japanese Army. This is based on the testimony of Mr. Masukichi Ikehata, one of the Lagos Island garrisons stationed on Lagos Island at that time, who lives in Fukuoka City. He opened at Fukuoka Seaside Park and continued to protest the “Fukuoka Dinosaur World.” According to Mr. Ikehata, the islands of Kwajalein and Luot on both sides of Lagos Island were crushed by a total attack by the U.S. forces, and when the attack on Lagos Island finally began, a dinosaur attacked the U.S. soldiers who landed. “Maybe he tried to protect his island rather than protect us. Originally he was docile, but he changed completely and became ferocious.” … Thus, thanks to the dinosaurs, the United States army withdraws. Mr. Ikehata’s Lagos Island garrison survived, and was subsequently able to withdraw the Japanese army. The dinosaur in question was seriously injured by the naval gunfire of a U.S. ship, and Mr. Ikehata and his colleagues couldn’t do anything about it. That’s the most regrettable thing, he says. Currently, this dinosaur is named Godzillasaurus, and in the Godzilla vs King Ghidorah incident that occurred in 1992, it was speculated that it was changed to Godzilla by the hydrogen bomb test at Bikini Atoll in 1954, but if this U.S. military attack had killed him, he would not have been bombarded for the next 40 years after that.
