What is the mysterious writing on the envelope that appeared in the latest Shin-Godzilla trailer? In a flash there is the envelop at the :34 second mark. What does it say? What does it mean? I’ve been doing some research and came across several Japanese web sites that offered clues. Here’s the scene below.

The letters are confusing and don’t ready match a word or name. But they definitely point in one direction. What did it say? A name? Here’s the Japanese:「呉爾羅」The corresponding sounds would be 「くらら?」”Gorara.” The first and third characters are clear. It is the middle character that’s ambigious. But the suggestion is clear「呉ゴ 爾ジ 羅ラ」「ゴジラ!」If you suspected the word to be Gojira, then that what it appears to be. This name is part of the Odo Island Gojira Legend (【大戸島の呉爾羅伝説】). The name associated with a shrine on the Island. And this makes much sense. The shrine is dedicated Odo Island luck. There, 呉爾羅, the God (Gojira) lives beyond the sea. Occasionally the islanders make offerings. Again, this makes sense and corresponds with Shodai Godzilla (1954). I also found this rock image.
