I was involved in both the main story and special effects teams

本作との最初の関わりは、防衛軍の幹部役として会議シーンに出演したことです。本編の撮影初日に金子(修介)監督にお祝いの挨拶に行ったら、「出演しませんか?」と突然言われまして。断ったんですが、「川北紘一)さんは出ますよ」と言われちゃって。出るしかありませんでしたね(笑)。制服は採寸して新調で名札も「手塚」でした。撮影当日、先に撮影した川北さんが、見るからに緊張されていたお陰で(笑)、逆に自分はリラックスして、石田太郎さんの隣でNGもなく無事に撮影を終えることができました。その後も時折、撮影現場に行きましたが、ある日、当時の製作部長だった森知貴秀さんから、「特B班の監督をやらないか」と声が掛かりました。撮影前から特撮のカット数が多いとの噂は聞いていましたが、撮影を開始して数日の段階で「このままでは撮り終わらない」と上層部が判断したらしいです。特撮の演出もやってみたかったし、神谷組を少しでも助けられるならと、ふたつ返事で引き受けました。

My first involvement with this work was appearing in a conference scene as a defense force executive. On the first day of filming, I went to congratulate director (Shusuke) Kaneko, and he suddenly asked me, “Would you like to appear?” I refused, but they said, “Koichi Kawakita will appear.” I had no choice but to leave (laughs). My uniform was new and my name tag was “Tezuka.” On the day of the shoot, Mr. Kawakita, who had taken the picture earlier, was obviously nervous (laugh), but on the contrary, I was able to relax and finish the shooting without any problems next to Mr. Taro Ishida. After that, I occasionally went to the shooting site, but one day, Mr. Takahide Moritomo, who was the production manager at the time, asked me, “Would you like to direct the special B group?” I had heard rumors that there would be a large number of special effects cuts before filming started, but it seems that the upper management decided that “we can’t finish filming at this rate” just a few days after the filming began. I wanted to try directing special effects, and if I could help Kamiya-group even a little, I accepted the offer without hesitation.

B班のスタッフは、監督の自分とベテランのカメラマンである江口(憲一さんのふたりでしたが、カットごとに必要なスタッフが手伝いに来てくれました。手掛けたカットは、神谷組が手の回らない合成用の映像素材が主でした。焼津市場のゴジラの足の踏み抜きをはじめとして、ゴジラの傷口のアップや大涌谷でバラゴンが上げる砂塵、落下する漁船や「水落し」の仕掛けを使った水飛沫ヘリの爆発、マリンスノーなど、トータルで10カットを画コンテを基に一週間弱で撮り上げました。

Team B consisted of me, the director, and Kenichi Eguchi, a veteran cameraman. I mainly used non-rotating video materials for synthesis, such as Godzilla’s stepping at the Yaizu market, close-ups of Godzilla’s wounds, dust raised by Baragon in Owakudani, falling fishing boats, and the “Mizuochi” mechanism. We shot a total of 10 cuts, such as the explosion of a helicopter that splashed water and marine snow, based on the storyboards in less than a week.

エンドクレジットに名前がないのは、森知さんの判断です。前年の『ゴジラ×メガギラスG消滅作戦」(00年)で監督デビューを飾り、翌年の「ゴジラ×メカゴジラ」(02年)への登板も決まっていたので、無理にクレジットに載せる必要もないと思いました。

It was Mr. Moritomo’s decision that his name was not included in the end credits. I made my directorial debut in the previous year’s “Godzilla x Megaguirus G Annihilation Operation” (2000), and I was scheduled to appear in the following year’s “Godzilla x MechaGodzilla” (2002), so I didn’t think it was necessary to put it in the credits.

今回のインタビューで、「×メガギラス」から「東京SOS」(03年)まで、4作連続でゴジラ映画に出演していたことに気付きました。感慨深いことですが、自分としては、このコンプリーションシリーズに、「×メガギラス」が取り上げられることを期待しています(笑)。

In this interview, I noticed that he had appeared in four Godzilla movies in a row, from “× Megaguirus” to “Tokyo SOS” (2003). It’s deeply moving, but I personally hope that “× Megaguirus” will be featured in this completion series (laughs).

てづかまさあき…1955年、栃木県生まれ。日大芸術学部を卒業後、フリーの助監督として市川崑監督の作品を多数担当。ゴジラ映画第24作「ゴジラ×メガギラスG消滅作戦」(00年)で監督デビューを果たし、引き続き「3式機龍」の2部作(2~3年)のほか、「戦国自衛隊1549』(05年)や「空救いの翼」(08年)も手掛けている。

Masaaki Tezuka: Born in Tochigi Prefecture in 1955. After graduating from Nihon University College of Art, he worked as a freelance assistant director on many of Kon Ichikawa’s works. He made his directorial debut with the 24th Godzilla movie “Godzilla x Megaguirus G Annihilation Operation” (2000) and “Rescue Wings” (2008).
